What Makes People Become Criminals

There are so many reasons in the world which make people become criminals. For example education, friends, background or family. The most important question is why people commit crimes? I think the most important factor is the living conditions in life. Sometimes the Money people earn is not enough to live for them. Wealthy people have everything while poor people live on the streets. Sometimes they can’t buy a loaf of bread to eat.

So the only alternative is to steal Money or something to live. The difference between people’s income is also important. In that case not only people are guilty but also the government is guilty too. Because it doesn’t provide enough Money to people for living.

It is normal that people steal or commit a crime. Illiteracy is one of the important reason which makes people become criminals. The person who doesn’t have an education, can’t know what is right or what is wrong. Education is rather important in human’s life to see the difference between legal or illegal.

The Essay on Places To Live Money Tolland 2005

The overlook of educated people is different than the others. They know the rules, they obey the laws, they don’t steal or they don’t commit a crime. But if you think the situation of an illiterate person, he will do everything to live. He can steal Money from innocent people, he can bully people on the street or even he can commit a crime without knowing that he did a bad thing.

He will become a guilty easily. Friends are also important in human’s life. They are the second who are always near you after the family. They can affect you easily in school’s life. Nowadays it’s a fact that there are lots of gangs in schools, especially in high schools. A child can do everything in order to be accepted by the gang.

Some of the children are being influenced by them. These children only want to be accepted, however they don’t know or can’t understand that have chosen the wrong way. If a person commits a crime or becomes guilty, I think we should think why he did it. Because nobody is guilty when he was born. Certainly there is a reason for doing those things. So we must learn those reasons and we mustn’t judge those people before listening to them.

We must bring them into society. I don’t think that if they had a chance, they would do the same mistakes again. Everybody deserves a second chance in life even if he is guilty.

Why do people commit crimes and what is a ‘typical criminal’? There is little doubt that some commit a crime such as shoplifting out of desperation, especially when food is concerned. Yet the same crime also attracts the attention of organised gangs who steal to order and cost stores hundreds of millions each year. The same crime but carried for different motives; one for survival, the other to make as much money as possible for as little work as possible. If caught, should each be treated the same as they committed the same crime?

Criminal Behavior Theories:

Various people have forwarded theories to explain why some people became criminals.

Demonology Theory

The oldest known explanatory model of behaviour is that of demonology. It used to be thought that criminal behaviour was the result of a possessed mind and/or body and the only way to exorcise the evil was usually by some torturous means. The key was a focus on the individual rather than his or her environment or any social forces.

Cesare Lombroso’s Anthropological Theory

Cesare Lombroso was an Italian criminologist who in 1876 promoted the theory of ‘anthropological determinism’ that essentially stated that criminality was inherited and that someone “born criminal”‘ could be identified by physical defects, which confirmed a criminal as savage. Lombroso believed that by studying someone’s physical features, you could identify a potential criminal. Lombroso’s criteria for this were:

A large jaw, forward projection of jaw, low sloping foreheads; high cheekbones, flattened or upturned nose; handle-shaped ears; large chins, very prominent in appearance; hawk-like noses or fleshy lips; hard shifty eyes, scanty beard or baldness and insensitivity to pain. Lombroso finally concluded that a criminal would have long arms.

Examples of Physiognomy of Criminals, According to Cesare Lombroso

Lombroso’s studies of female criminality began with measurements of females’ skulls and photographs in his search for “atavism“. He concluded that female criminals were rare and showed few signs of “degeneration” because they had “evolved less than men due to the inactive nature of their lives”. Lombroso argued it was the females’ natural passivity that withheld them from breaking the law, as they lacked the intelligence and initiative to become criminal.

Overdeveloped Superegos

Sigmund Freud had his own views on what makes a criminal. Freud proposed that much deviance resulted from an excessive sense of guilt as a result of an overdeveloped superego. Persons with overdeveloped superegos feel guilty for no reason and wish to be punished in order to relieve this guilt they are feeling and committing crimes is a method of obtaining such desired punishment and relieving guilt. In effect, a person commits the crime so that they can get punished and thus relieve guilt – the guilt comes before the crime. According to this view, crime is not the result of a criminal personality, but of a poorly integrated psyche.

August Aichorn is probably the best known neo-Freudian in criminology. Aichorn felt that there were three predisposing traits that had to be present before the emergence of a life of crime: the desire for immediate gratification, placing greater desire on one’s personal desires over the ability to have good relationships with other people and a lack of guilt over one’s actions.

Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory

According to Albert Bandura’s theory, delinquent and criminal behaviour is learned via the same psychological processes as any other behaviour: through learned and repeated exposure to rewards (reinforcements) that support the behaviour. On the flip side, behaviours that received no support or negative reactions are not learned and therefore will not recur. Bandura believes that people observe others’ behaviours and decide whether or not to adopt them.

Yochelson and Samenow put forward the theory of free will to explain criminal behaviour. This has five points to it:

In August 2011, some major cities in England experienced riots and looting.

2011 England Riots

The immediate explanation was that English cities were infested with ‘feral gangs of youths’ – a perception gained from the clips shown on television. However, while many of those prosecuted were young, they were not exclusively young. Also they were not always from broken homes or from a background of deprivation or unemployment. Some of those caught, prosecuted and imprisoned had professional qualifications and/or worked within professions such as teaching – the media highlighted the example of a teaching assistant sent to prison whose primary task in his school was to coach youngsters on acceptable behaviour.

It is probably impossible to say what a typical criminal is – even if a ‘typical criminal’ exists. While there is a common perception that a criminal is from a broken home, has suffered a deprived childhood, lacks a good education etc, that would not include the likes of Dr Harold Shipman, Bernie Madoff or the recent cases of former Members of Parliament (both MP’s and Lords) who were sent to prison for breaking the law.

There’s no escape from the fact; the crime rate continues to increase every single day despite the governments taking so many precautionary measures. The truth be told, the real world is a blend of multiple opportunities and mixed economies which is why a lot of people get left out. You will be shocked to know, google lists America as one of the most dangerous countries of the world to live in. There are many reasons why people commit crimes. Though there has been immense improvement in the safety and security department, yet criminals don’t seem to pull their punches back. In this article we will guide you through ten reasons why people commit crime. Many studies around the world have given some of the most cliché reasons for why people commit crimes. However, the weirdest thing about the criminal world is that every day unfolds a new reason for why people dive full throttle in this field. Some of the common reasons for committing crime are:

This is perhaps one of the most concrete reasons why people commit crimes. Economic deprivation is seen as a major instigator in this regard. You will be shocked to know that 3 billion people in this world are categorized as poor and living on a very lower per capita income. UNICEF says more than 1 billion children are living in poverty worldwide. More than 20,000 children die due to poverty every day. In a country where economic deprivation is rampant, it is common for people to engage in criminal acts. The hunger and poor economic conditions are what leads many people to invest themselves in criminal cases.

Furthermore, when people are unable to earn for the longest time, they often start getting frustrated. The truth be told, by the latest research, the digital medium and television play a very important role in telling people about how several criminal acts can be bought to life. We live in a time where the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer every single day.

This is a new form of concern in the modern world. Many young people commit crimes because they see a lot of their peers engaging in such acts. It is common for high school students and college going students to engage in drugs, weed, marijuana and a lot more. Young age is very critical since one isn’t filled with wisdom and experience which is why a lot of people make the mistake of becoming criminals for no reason at all. Most youths who don’t have a strong will to neglect or confront minor criminal acts often end up getting involved in big troubles. Unfortunately many young people in this world don’t realize that they’re doing multiple criminal acts by being a part of things they aren’t supposed to be. Therefore peer pressure is another notorious reason for why young people are compelled into joining the bandwagon.

Drugs have always been highly criticized by critics. A person who is addicted to drug will at one point in time do something he/she isn’t supposed to do. Drug addicts are often unable to get rid of addiction as a result of which their life starts getting filled with bad habits. A poor lifestyle compels a person to adopt habits which he/she should distance themselves from. After research, when the most violent criminals were asked about their crimes, they blamed drugs as the main reason. Drug addiction is another rampantly growing disease which has slowly encapsulated many parts of the world. As many as 0.7 million people die from drug addiction in US alone.

This issue is often brushed under the carpet but is important to bring it in the spotlight. The drive to get that seat is what swings many politicians to equip the youths with weapons and perform criminal activities. In this day and age it is common for politicians to hire mobs and rent people at lower prices to break into a building or start a war-like situation within the country. Politics have always been the subject of severe media scrutiny, and the truth be told, it is often the mother of all the problems in nations which haven’t stabilized. In developing countries it is common for politicians to kill people and to be found guilty of murder. There have been several cases in Asian countries where politicians were found guilty of having killed their people in masses.

Religion is another controversial part of this world. No one can escape from the fact; people still fight on racial divides and sectarian issues in society. Even though practicing own religion is a basic human right, yet many uneducated and illiterate people fail to understand it. In several criminal cases, religious fanatics have been accused of murdering innocent people based on their school of thought. Especially in staunchly religious communities it is common for people to chop off the heads of their people in case they find somebody talking about the modern world. However, in advanced and secular countries, the criminal rate because of religion is fairly less.

Family is also a weak point of any person who is about to commit a crime. If you’re not being able to provide for the entire family as a poor person, at one point in time you will think of walking the negative path to get what your family needs. In most cases, when people are asked, they claim they need to provide for the family because of which they end up getting stuck behind bars. There are many things which go on within the family, compelling a person to get involved in criminal activities. Many young people engage in criminal activities for they believe it is their responsibility to take care of family even if it means to commit a felony. In many murder cases, young people are often caught who then explained how the rich bribe them handsomely to do something they’re not supposed to.

Societal norms and standards have always been topical. We live in a day and age where money is valued more than relationships and a normal standard of life. In the drive to succeed; many people fail to create a demarcation between their needs and wants. In a society where even universities are teaching children to earn money instead of realizing its value, one can never say crimes won’t be committed. Some parents have a bizarre habit of comparing their children with other kids which is why their kids often indulge in criminal activities to make a lot of money. When people flaunt their wealth in society it is common for less privileged people to feel compelled to earn more. Therefore if you’re flaunting your wealth in front of the poor and needy or anyone from a middle-class background, you’re contributing to the crime stats of the society in some way.

This skyrocketing factor in many countries is often the main reason why so many people commit crimes. You will be shocked to know more than 30% of people in this world are unemployed. It is quite frustrating after one fails to get a job post studying for years in high school and university. Unemployment is not just an issue relevant to the developing countries but equally common in developed countries. Unfortunately people spend a lot of money on their education, but seldom come across a good job immediately post the completion of their studies. Most youngsters destroy their careers when they engage in criminal activities very early on in their lives.

This is another major reason for crime rates increasing every day. In countries where there is economic deprivation of even the basic rights, it is common for people to rebel and transition into doing notorious activities. Furthermore in small communities it is common for people to engage in fights over land, property, wealth etc. Therefore to get their voices heard, many people commit crimes for the world to see what they’ve done. Especially during election campaigns, it is common for angry people to destroy cars, houses and properties to tell the government how cruel they can be if not entitled to their rights.

10. Unfair judicial system

People who are not served justice become hostile and often engage in crimes. Though most of the courts of law try to do their best in the light of available evidence and all, but sometimes the innocent are proven guilty in the court which compels them to show the ugly side of their personality to the world. As many as thousands of people blame the judicial system as unfair and commit crimes. Many often kill the members of the winning party when justice is not served to them. In many developing countries, it is common for people in small communities to kill each other based on simple issues. If you’re from US and want to meet a suitable criminal lawyer on account of a relative or friend you must search Los Angeles criminal lawyer to get a list of all working professionals of that state.

Conclusion:

Lastly, we would like to conclude, it is crucial to stay away from crime. The world is completely blind in separating needs from desires. Even if you have less money for survival, you must be happy with it instead of willing to contour yourself in the pool of crime.

Why Do People Commit Crimes?

Perhaps, the question “Why do people commit crimes?” has crossed your mind for a fleeting moment. Several reasons can be drawn on why people engage in various crimes.

On top of the reasons why people commit crimes is due to poverty. In dire need of money, people tend to steal in order to feed their hungry families. The likelihood of a one’s stealing depends on the degree of need to satisfy one’s wants. A well-off man may choose to steal just out of greed as opposed to a homeless man who desperately needs to feed his family.

Another reason that can be elicited from the question “Why do people commit crimes?” is because of peer pressure. Teenagers are most likely to succumb to pressures from peers, with the desire to be part of a group. Some adolescents are left with no choice but to allow their friends to influence them to commit minor or major offenses against society. Some young adults resort to various juvenile crimes, like vandalism, drug possession, assault, and theft.

Some people commit offenses or crimes to make “easy” money. They get involved in drug syndicates, prostitution, or robbery. Some people feel an adrenaline rush when committing a serious offense. Revenge could also be a motivating factor to make someone commit various offenses.

With the unceasing crime cases, you can’t help but ask “why do people commit crimes?” A proven fact of science revealed that injuries in certain parts of the brain can lead to a person’s impaired judgment and aggression. A study conducted on the brains of convicted serial killers revealed that damage has been sustained due to malnutrition, maltreatment, or abuse.

Why do people commit crimes when they know they’re going to end up in jail? It is a daunting thought that people still commit offenses when they know that they will get a permanent criminal record for it.

Going to prison may not have crossed the minds of some of these offenders, or they simply just did not think of the consequences of their actions. Some of the gang cultures consider going to prison as a badge of honor. For some offenders, going to prison is a way of survival, as you are provided with regular meals, a proper place to sleep, and even education to help you get a job after serving term in jail.

Whatever the motivation behind a crime, a criminal act will always be a matter of choice. Environmental factors may influence one’s behavior, but ultimately, it depends on the choice that one will make.

Why Do People Commit A Crime?

Isn’t it a curiosity how so many crimes are committed every day? What might be the reason for this? Many researchers worked on this topic and came up with different explanations. Ted Bundy, Albert DeSalvo, Aileen Wuornos, Richard Ramirez, Charles Manson, H.H. Holmes, Jeffrey Dahmer and Elizabeth Báthory are some of the most famous and dangerous criminals the world has seen but isn’t it intriguing to notice out of nine names here, and two were of women. Psychologists and sociologists have had their own research and claims to back as to why men tend to be more involved with crime than women.

Men and women have a different way to vent out their anger and, in a way, it is dictated by society. Men are expected to vent out their frustration, stress, anger in more violent ways meanwhile women who are to use more subtle ways to vent their aggression (not hurting anyone physically), manipulation or being passive aggressive. Maybe the reason why this happens is because our society is built in a way where both the genders are taught to have different roles thus the upbringing differs. It is often seen that women are taught to control and alter their feelings and emotions, especially anger according to the people and environment they are in. A Finnish researcher Kaj Bjorkqvist, researched on the topic about aggression among both the genders. It was already observed that boys are predisposed to anger but when he interviewed adolescent girls, he discovered that girls are equally aggressive but they let it out in different ways. Instead of fighting in a playground, they play subtle mind games that may be even more damaging. Regina Goerge in 2004’s Mean Girls, an adaption of book «Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence» by Rosalind Wiseman. Regina was portrayed as a toxic person who used to manipulate and bully others by dictating their lives by ordering them to wear certain clothes on some days and making various school rules. There are students who actually bully in school and it is a problem to be focused on.

Children witnessing and internalizing the idea of parents fighting where both the parents put forth their aggressive self has negative impacts. It is necessary to teach them how to control their emotions and helping them with a positive outlet for their negative emotions. One of the reasons for male statistics to be higher than women is inter-male competition. According to sociological and evolutionary psychological perspective, psychologist and professor Mark van Vugt, from VU University at Amsterdam, Netherlands, argued that males have evolved to be more aggressive and group oriented throughout the time as to gain access to resources, territories and higher status. High homicide stats of males are the direct result of the competition which leads to higher level of violence (assault, murder and battery). The large number of criminal activities between men, if compared to women, is a direct consequence of the male competition. Fights further escalate when neither of the males are ready to back down, until they become violent or one of them ends up giving up. Studies showed a correlation between testosterone and dominance in males especially among the most violent criminals in prison. Another theory suggested that evolutionary neuroandrogenic theory of male aggression. Testosterone and other androgens have evolved to masculinize a brain in order to be competitive, going as far as harming or killing each other. Individuals with masculinized brains as a result of pre-natal and adult life testosterone and androgens enhance their resource acquiring abilities in order to survive, and attract.

Economist Jeffery Grogger states that high crime rate among females might also be because of their need to provide for their family and adverse labor market opportunities. We all know, in our society, it is expected for the male in the house to earn and take care of the family which builds up a pressure on the person’s mind but now the times are changing where women are also working and making their career. Males have this idea of solely working and providing for the family ingrained inside them that does not let them get diverted. With the societal expectations and already present psychological stress they become desperate to do the designated task that when there is unavailability of a decent paying job, young males become prone to taking up criminal act that promise higher payoffs. When a person finds it difficult to look after his family and is in dire need of a money and it is not available, they tend to turn towards other alternatives which ends up being the criminal sector.

Rape, Murder, Drug trade, trafficking, arms trafficking, illegal business etc are few of the crimes which are committed by the people in the society. It is important to keep a check on each other, and motivate to do positive things with positive approach so that no one ends up taking a drastic step of committing a crime.
