What means of travelling do you know

Travelling – Путешествия

Millions of people all around the world adore travelling. We travel because we wish to see new countries and cities, visit historical places, meet new people and taste different cuisines.

There are different means of transportation. People can travel by ship, airplane, train or car. All means of transportation have their advantages and disadvantages.

I would like to talk briefly about each of them.

Travelling by airplane

Travelling by airplane is the fastest, but the most expensive. A lot of people prefer travelling by airplane, but some people are afraid of heights and that’s why they prefer travelling by train.

Travelling by train

I have to notice that travelling by train is very popular in Russia. Modern trains have very comfortable carriages and seats. There is also the dining-car in each train. You can see many interesting places and enjoy the nature, looking through the window.

Travelling by ship

Trips on cruise ships have a lot of advantages. One of them is the amazing pricing. Most cruise lines are all-inclusive packages. This includes a person’s cruise fare, lodging, food and some onboard entertainment and sightseeing.

Travelling by car

And, finally, travelling by car is also very popular in Russia. A lot of people choose this means of transportation. They don’t need to buy tickets, book hotels etc. They can stop whenever they wish, rest and stay at the same place as long as they want.

Hiking

Hiking is a very popular means of travelling, but not as popular in Russia as it is popular abroad. Generally, young people prefer this kind of travelling. Walking tours are very exciting.

My opinion

I prefer travelling by plane. To my mind, it is the most comfortable and fast means of transportation.

And finally, it is commonly known that travelling is a great thing! Nothing can give you so many positive emotions and memories as travelling to some remarkable country or city.

Lesson 13. Means of Travelling

Pre-reading

Task 1. Answer the questions:

1) What do you think, what is this text about?

2) What means of travelling do you know?

3) How would you like to travel? Why?

Task 2. While reading this text find any advantages and disadvantages of different means of travelling and make your own conclusion according to your research: Which is the best way to travel? Prove your opinion.

Task 3. Read the following text:

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It is always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

Those who live in the country like to travel to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at exotic restaurants. City dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe and laze in the sun.

Most travellers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them – the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes, valleys, plains, waterfalls, forests; different kinds of trees, flowers and plants; animals and birds. Later, perhaps years later, they will be reminded by the photos of the happy time they had.

Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages. You can see much more interesting places of the country you are travelling through. Modern trains have very comfortable seats. There are also sleeping cars and dining cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable. Speed, comfort and safety are the main advantages of trains and planes. That is why many people prefer them to all other means.

Travelling by sea is popular mostly for pleasure trips. On board large ships and small river boats people can visit foreign countries and different places of interest within their own country. It is very pleasant to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing and hear the cry of the seagulls.

Many people like to travel by car. It is interesting too, because you can stop when and where you like, you do not have to buy tickets or carry your suitcases.

A very popular method of travelling is hiking. It is travelling on foot. Walking tours are very healthful. Hitch-hiking is a very popular method of travelling among young people. But it is more popular abroad than in our country.

All means of travelling have their advantages and disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and destinations. If we are fond of travelling, we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers, and see pictures of them on TV. The best way to study geography and foreign languages is to travel, and the best way to get to know and understand people is to meet them in their own homes.

Vocabulary

Task 4. A. Give Russian equivalents to the English words and study the word combinations:

Tourism

Twenty years ago not many people traveled overseas for their holidays. The majority of people stayed to have holidays in their country. Today the situation is different and the world seems much smaller.

It is possible to book a holiday to a seaside resort on the other side of the world through the Internet. Staying at home, you can book it through the Web or by phone. The plane takes you straight there and within some hours of leaving your country, you can be on a tropical beach, breathing a super clean air and swimming in crystal warm water of tropical sea.

We can travel by car, by train or plane, if we have got a long distance tour. Some young people prefer walking or hitch-hike traveling, when you travel, paying nearly nothing. You get new friends, lots of fun and have no idea where you will be tomorrow. It has great advantages for the tourists, who want to get the most out of exploring the world and give more back to the people and places visited. If you like mountains, you could climb any mountains around the globe and there is only one restriction. It is money. If you like traveling, you have got to have some money, because it is not a cheap hobby indeed. The economy of some countries is mainly based on tourism industry. Modern tourism has become a highly developed industry, because any human being is curious and inquisitive, we like leisure, visit other places. That is why tourism prospers.

People travel from the very beginning of their civilization. Thousands years ago all people were nomads and collectors. They roamed all their lives looking for food and better life. This way human beings populated the whole planet Earth. So, traveling and visiting other places are the part of our consciousness. That is why tourism and traveling are so popular.

Nowadays tourism has become a highly developed business. There are trains, cars and air jet liners, buses, ships that provide us with comfortable and secure traveling.

If we travel for pleasure, by all means one would like to enjoy picturesque places they are passing through, one would like seeing the places of interest, enjoying the sightseeing of the cities, towns and countries.

Nowadays people travel not only for pleasure but also on business. People have to go to other countries for taking part in different negotiations, for signing some very important documents, for participating in different exhibitions, in order to exhibit the goods of own firm or company. Traveling on business helps people to get more information about achievements of other companies, which will help making own business more successful.

There are a lot of means of traveling: traveling by ship, by plane, by car, walking. It depends on a person to decide which means of traveling one would prefer.

READING FOR INFORMATION AND DISCUSSION

TOPIC: TRAVELLING

Text A. DIFFERENT MEANS OF TRAVEL

Alex: Personally I hate seeing people off. I prefer being seen off myself. I’m extremely fond of travelling and feel terribly envious of any friend who is going anywhere. I can’t help feeling I should so much like to be in his place.

Bert: But what method of travelling do you prefer?

Alex: For me there is nothing like travel by air; it is more comfortable, more convenient and of course far quicker than any other method. There is none of the dust and dirt of a railway or car journey, none of the trouble of changing from train to steamer and then to another train. Besides, flying is a thrilling thing. Don’t you agree?

Bert: I think I should like to say a word or two for trains. With a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. From the comfortable corner seat of a railway carriage you have a splendid view of the whole countryside. If you are hungry, you can have a meal in the dining-car; and if the journey is a long one you can have a wonderful bed in a sleeper. Besides, do you know any place that’s more interesting than a big railway-station? There is the movement, the excitement, the gaiety of people going away or waiting to meet friends. There are the shouts of the porters as they pull luggage along the platforms to the waiting trains? The crowd at the booking-office getting tickets, the hungry and thirsty ones hurrying to the refreshment rooms before the train starts. No, really! Do you know a more exciting place than a big railway-station?

Alex: And that is?

Cecil: A big sea port. For me there is no travel so fine as by boat. I love to feel the deck of the boat under my feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in my face and hear the cry of the sea-gulls. And what excitement, too, there is in coming into the harbour and seeing round us all the ships, steamers, cargo-ships, sailing ships, rowing boats.

Alex: Well, I suppose that’s all right for those that like it, but not for me. I’m always seasick, especially when the sea is a little bit rough.

Bert: I’ve heard that a good cure for seasickness is a small piece of dry bread.

Alex: Maybe; but I think a better cure is a large piece of dry land.

David: Well, you may say what you like about aeroplane flights, sea voyages, railway journeys or tours by car, but give me a walking tour any time. What does the motorist see of the country? But the walker leaves the dull broad highway and goes along little winding lanes where cars can’t go. He takes mountain paths through the heather, he wanders by the side of quiet lakes and through the shade of woods. He sees the real country, the wild flowers, the young birds in their nests, the deer in the forest; he feels the quietness and calm of nature.

And besides, you are saving your railway fare travelling on foot. No one can deny that walking is the cheapest method of traveling.

So I say: a walking tour for me.

Text B. AT THE STATION

F.: Well, here we are at last! When I get into the boat-train, I feel that holidays have already

begun. Have you got the tickets, Jan?

J.: Yes, here they are. I booked seats for you and me; trains are usually crowded at this time. We

have numbers A 26 and A 30; two corner-seats in a non-smoker, one seat facing the engine,

one back to the engine. Is that all right?

F.: That’s very good, Jan. I don’t like going a long journey in a smoker. May I sit facing the

J.: Of course! You can take whichever seat you like. As a matter of fact, I really prefer sitting

with my back to the engine. Here’s our carriage, A, and here’s our compartment. You can get

into the train now.

F.: Lucy, won’t you come into the carriage with me? You will be warmer inside.

L.: Thanks, I will.

J.: I’ll go and see that our luggage has been put into the guard’s van, and I’ll book two seats in the

restaurant car for lunch. I’ll get some newspapers at the bookstall and some chocolate on my

way back. (He goes away.)

L.: Jan is a good fellow for getting things done, isn’t he?

F.: He is. I don’t know anyone better. I’m very glad he is coming with me. I know that I shall

have a very comfortable journey. Jan will see to everything – find the seats on the train, see

that my luggage is all right, and get it through the customs. I shan’t have to do anything at all

except sit back and enjoy the journey.

Text C. A VOYAGE ROUND EUROPE

L.: Hello, Anne. Are you back from your holidays already? Oh, you’re lovely and brown!

Where have you been?

A.: Oh, I’ve had a fantastic time! I’ve just been on a cruise round Europe with my Dad.

L.: Oh, you lucky thing! You must have seen so many interesting places. Where did you sail

A.: Well, we left from Odessa…

L.: Did you call at any European ports?

A.: Yes. Quite a lot. We went ashore at each one and went on some really interesting trips

L.: Did you go by train or did you hire a car?

A.: No, we went by coach. Now I can say I’ve seen Rome, London, Paris and Athens.

L.: Oh, I’m so envious. Were you ever seasick?

A.: Only a little. I was fine, until two days after Gibraltar. The sea suddenly became very rough,

and I had to stay in my cabin.

L.: What a shame. But was your father all right?

A.: Yes, he was fine all the time. He’s never seasick.

L.: Did you go ashore when you reached Spain?

A.: No, we only saw the coast-line from the deck. It didn’t really look very inviting, a bit bare

and monotonous, in fact.

L.: And did you go for a swim in the Mediterranean?

A.: Yes, and in the Atlantic ocean too. There are some beautiful beaches on the west coast of

France. It’s so nice to have a swim there.

L.: Well, I’m glad you’ve had such a lovely time!

Travelling became apart of our life. Thousands of people travel every day either on business or for pleasure. There are different kinds of traveling. People can travel by car or by bus, by train, by plane or by ship.

Of course, travelling by air is the fastest and the most convenient way, but it is the most expensive, too.

Travelling by train is slower than travelling by plane, but it is less expensive. You can see many interesting places of the country through the window. Modern trains have more comfortable seats. That is why many people prefer them to all other kinds of travelling.

Travelling by sea is popular mostly for pleasure trips. Tourists can make voyages on large ships to foreign countries. The trips on the Volga, the Don and the Black Sea are very popular today.

As for me I prefer traveiling by car. I think it’s more convenient because you don’t-buy tickets, you don’t have to carry your baggage and you can stop any place. You can spend as much time as you like at any place.

On board a large cruise ship people traverse oceans and visit other countries. The ship stops excursions. Crossing the ocean is wonderful and long voyage. The only drawback is seasickness. So before starting on a voyage you should find out whether you suffer from it or not.

Many people prefer to travel by car or by bus. It can be a trip not far from your home to explore the nearby towns and cities. It can be a long journey even to foreign country. Modern buses have comfortable seats, video, phone and fridge. So you can have hot tea or coffee and snack.

This mean of travelling has a lot of advantages. The main advantage is that you set off on hikes and stop whenever and wherever you like. You can enjoy the beauty of nature, of places.
