Everyone loves music but have different ways to enjoy it. Either listening to the song, humming the tunes or playing the instruments. Each one has it’s own choice in linking oneself to music. Some of those folks are the ones who actually play an instrument or compose music. It could be as a hobby or as a career choice. This allows them to be a step closer to music. There are hundreds of different kinds of instruments people can learn to play though. Being able to play your favorite instrument has many advantages. Some use it as a pastime, others do this out of passion for music, and for some it’s kinda stress buster or meditation. Millions of people all over the world play all kinds of instruments as a way to express themselves. Others simply do it for entertainment, fun or to earn money. But out of so many, which ones are the most popular instruments that are easy to play? This list shows the top 15 most popular and easiest out of all of them.

1. Keyboard

Keyboards, the electronic piano, are extremely versatile and very low maintenance. Electronic keyboards are capable of recreating a wide range of instrument sounds and synthesizer tones with less complex sound synthesis.They are popular with younger children and are great for recording and changing performance. The main difference between a keyboard and a piano is that the sound is produced electronically and of course it is portable.

Electronic keyboards are usually designed for home users, beginners and other non-professional users. As with learning all musical instruments, learning to play the keyboard has the same benefits as learning to play the piano. As well as developing their concentration, memory and focus skills it will enhance their fine motor skills.

2. Piano

The piano, in particular, has been an unparalleled outlet for those seeking escape, creative expression, and simply fun and joy. The modern piano has 36 black and 52 white keys, making a total of 88 keys and is played using a keyboard. The piano was first invented around 1700 and is used for many types of music including classical, jazz, traditional and popular. Often thought of as the best musical instrument to begin playing it is highly versatile, has a wide-range and a grand ability to change dynamics.

Playing the piano is a workout all its own, and offers different physical and physiological advantages to players of all ages. Children will develop concentration, perseverance and emotional expression. It will also enhance their fine motor skills and concentration whilst improving memory and focus. It is also a very calming and relaxing musical instrument to learn. Playing piano has also been shown to be a great source of stress relief, and provides ample opportunities to bolster self-esteem.

3. Recorder

Recorder is the perfect first wind instrument to start with. Because it is cheap however, it seems to be treated as a “cheap” alternative to a “real” instrument (such as the flute). They have a very interesting history because their development was stopped for centuries and only resumed in the twentieth century. For starters, the recorder is a great instrument that is played by everyone from the absolute beginner up to conservatory-trained professionals. A more common benefit that one doesn’t necessarily require a super-skilled teacher to learn how to coordinate their fingers, their tongue and their breath — all 3 things at once — in order to play any tunes to a reasonable standard.

4. Classical Guitar

The guitar is a string instrument with anything from four to eighteen strings with a normal guitar having six strings. The sound is projected acoustically and it is typically played by strumming (or plucking) the strings with one hand and fretting the strings with the other hand. Learning to play the guitar is great for confidence building and developing social skills. Drums produce sounds by the vibration of a stretched membrane known as the head. The head covers either one or both ends of a hollow body which is known as the shell. It’s about timing and coordination, both of which forces the drummer to be in the present moment.

6. Electric Guitar

The electric guitar is a string instrument. Invented in 1931 the electric guitar is basically a guitar that uses a pick-up to convert the vibration of its strings — which are typically made of metal, and which occurs when a guitarist strums, plucks or finger-picks the strings — into electrical impulses. The electric guitar usually has 6 strings but can sometimes have up to 12 strings.electric guitars are a little easier to play than acoustic guitars. The strings are a bit lighter, the neck is a bit thinner, and for hands that aren’t used to fretting chords that makes things more comfortable. That’s good, because when new players struggle with the mechanics of playing they are more likely to quit. Going with a guitar that’s easier on the hands removes one of the barriers that prevent newbies from advancing on the instrument.

Most new guitar players haven’t chosen their musical direct yet. It takes some time to figure out what you really love, and what you’re really good at. An electric instrument gives you the freedom to explore those choices. You may find you love strumming chords or playing classical music finger-style and you’ll eventually switch to acoustic guitar. It is often a solo instrument in jazz, jazz fusion, Latin, funk, progressive rock and other rock and metal styles. Wooden flutes produce a dark sound whereas silver flutes produce a brighter sound.

The cello is a bowed stringed orchestral instrument that is versatile with a rich voice. A member of the violin family, cellos are most closely associated with European classical music. The cello is normally made from wood and the top and back are traditionally hand-carved. One of the most incredible things about the cello is that it can become every string instrument in the orchestra. Cellos can be almost unrecognizable in certain parts, their sound being easily transformed.

The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. Cello will come more easily to someone with experience reading notes and rhythms.Music education, especially one that involves learning a string instrument like the cello, is an excellent example of comprehensive learning.Playing the cello encourages both teamwork and leadership skills and teaches general music knowledge. It is a great instrument for confidence building whilst improving concentration and focus.

13. Clarinet

Clarinet actually means ‘little trumpet’ and belongs to a family of woodwind instruments. It is played using a single-reed mouthpiece and its cylindrical shape is mainly responsible for the clarinet’s distinctive musical notes. The tone quality can vary greatly with the musician, the music, the instrument, the mouthpiece, and the reed. The clarinet is an easy instrument for beginners to learn. Although high-level players will easily recognize how difficult it is to get things like dynamics, tone and tuning correct, if you are a beginner that sticks to maybe a two-octave range then the clarinet is incredibly forgiving. From a relaxed and open inhalation to a controlled and precise exhale, both brass and woodwind instruments can give your lungs a great respiratory workout.

14. Trumpet

The trumpet group contains the instruments with the highest register in the brass family. Music is created from small gusts of air that are blown strategically into the trumpet in order to cause vibrations inside the tube. It takes a great deal of skill, breathing techniques and personal strength to know how and when to blow precisely the right amount of air into the tube to create different notes and different tones. Improving these types of skills can only be acquired through the right kind of proper trumpet training and practice with a qualified instructor In some ways, the trumpet is easy to play. In other ways, it can be argued that it is the most difficult of instruments. On the easy side, it has only three valves; but some of the highest and most difficult notes to perform on the trumpet require tremendous air pressure in the lungs.

What Musical Instrument Should I Learn to Play? (Part 1)

What musical instrument should you learn to play? Good question! Whether you’ve been wishing for years that you could learn to play piano (you can!) or you’re trying to help your child choose and they have no idea what a clarinet is, it can be a tough decision. And what if you start an instrument but then you don’t like it? Or how do you make the right choice between two instruments if you’ve never played either?

To help you answer this question, I’m doing a series of blogposts. This post, Part 1, is for everyone but especially for adults or teens trying to choose their own instrument. Part 2 will be primarily for parents trying to help their child choose an instrument. Part 3 will be my opinions on the experience of learning various specific instruments.

Piano First!

Before I say anything else, I strongly recommend learning to play piano. SO many people have come up to me over the years, saying, “I wish I’d learned to play the piano!” or, “I wish I hadn’t quit taking piano lessons when I was a kid!” This by far the most common instrument to learn and in my opinion, it’s the most versatile. You can play music of any style on the piano and have a great time doing it! On piano you learn to play melody, harmony, and accompaniment all at the same time, which teaches you a great understanding of music as a whole. Learning piano also has all kinds of other benefits, and since it teaches you to read music for high notes AND low notes, it’s easier to go from learning piano to another instrument later. Piano has the greatest potential of any instrument to lead you in any musical direction you want to go.

But of course, there are many other excellent instruments to learn besides the piano! If piano isn’t your cup of tea or if you’re more interested in a different kind of instrument, ask yourself these questions:

What kind of music do I like?

Are you a country girl, a rock lover, or a pop fan? Or are you more the type to listen to classical music and go to orchestra concerts? Do you prefer jazz like Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong? What do you like to listen to? This could help you figure out what you would like to play. For example, jazz lovers may favor trumpet, alto saxophone, piano, or trombone. Rock lovers may favor guitar or drums. And classical lovers may want to go for a stringed instrument like violin or cello, or french horn, or even oboe or bassoon. If you like all music, any band instrument could suit you, from flute or clarinet to saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or tuba. If you prefer choral music or musicals, maybe you should learn to sing instead of play an instrument. Because there are SO MANY instrument choices, pick one that will help you learn to play (or sing) the kind of music you like best.

* That said, recognize that many instruments cross genres. While violin mostly plays classical/orchestral, it’s also used in Celtic music, rock, jazz, and all other genres. Similarly, flute is often forgotten as a frequent jazz instrument, guitar can be rock or folk, and the piano is used for all genres.

Why do I want to learn an instrument?

If you want to learn an instrument because it sounds fun or you love music, then go for whatever you want! If you love to perform, maybe you’ll want an instrument that’s more of a solo or main instrument, like guitar, piano, violin, or trumpet. And if you want to make music your career, just remember this: making a career out of music requires a lot of dedication, typically to one main instrument. Most professional musicians have one main instrument that they’ve been mastering for YEARS. (Mine is piano, but I loved music too much to stick with just that.)

Where would I play it?

Are you going to play strictly from the comfort of your home, or are you looking for places to perform in shows or concerts? If you have the opportunity to join a local performing group, ask them what instruments they’re in need of. If you’re pretty shy and you don’t want to play in front of a major audience, then maybe you’ll want to steer clear of loud instruments like the drum set and trumpet and opt for something softer like the flute. Or, if you want to learn so that you can perform and be in the spotlight, choose an instrument that’ll highlight you onstage (guitar, drums, violin, etc). Sadly, you’re not likely to find many opportunities to play the bagpipes…

Can I find a music teacher in my area?

Having a teacher to help is essential to learning any instrument! If you live in a small city and decide you want to learn to play the oboe, you may have quite a hard time trying to find a teacher. But if you choose a more common instrument like piano, violin, or guitar, there will probably be more options. This doesn’t mean you should necessarily avoid a rarer instrument if you have your heart set on it. Just know that you’ll have to do a little digging or travel a greater distance for lessons. Fortunately, some teachers teach online music lessons. If you decide to learn piano, voice, flute, or music theory, I’d be more than happy to teach you music lessons in Corona, CA or online.

What instruments are available to me, and what can I afford?

Unfortunately, not every instrument is available everywhere at a price everyone can afford. If only! When I was in 4th grade I really wanted to learn to play the saxophone, but we didn’t have one and couldn’t afford it at the time. My sister had an old flute, though, so that’s what I ended up learning. It turns out I liked it a lot and played flute well into college, and now I teach flute lessons. But don’t let price deter you from checking out your options — you can always choose a cheaper starter instrument and upgrade it later. Also, a lot of music stores rent out instruments for affordable rates, and sometimes they even sell used instruments. If you’re not sure which instrument you like best, this is also a great way to hop from instrument to instrument until you find the one that’s perfect for you. If you know what you want to learn and you can’t seem to find it for an affordable price, ask around at music stores and schools. They’ll probably be able to help you get your hands on it.

What instrument could I physically play?

Many people don’t even think about this question, but some individuals of smaller stature or with physical limitations may have to limit their choices. Would it be difficult to support a cello and push it around to and from orchestra practice? Do you have a bad back that would make it a miserable experience to carry around a sousaphone? Practicality should be a concern, so consider these things, but don’t let them prevent you from learning what you want to learn! Even if it may be physically difficult to play something, if it’s possible and you’re motivated, you can do it. Just recognize that a little extra work may have to go into it.

Some crazy stories: I knew someone with very short arms who played the trombone, and because the trombone slide extends out further than she could reach, she’d use her foot to help. Yes, she’d push the slide out of reach with her hand and then use her foot to nudge it back into her reach. I also know a very skilled trumpet player who has no fingers on one hand. And he is an amazing musician! Even if there are obstacles, don’t let your body’s “limitations” prevent you from learning music if you want to. If you want to learn, there’s no one stopping you but yourself.

Do I want to learn more than one instrument?

If you want to learn multiple instruments, I’d definitely start with the piano for the reasons I shared earlier. Can you imagine how much easier it’ll be to learn a second instrument when all you have to do is learn how to play it, rather than learn how to play it AND how to read the music for it? You could also learn multiple instruments that are similar in one area or another. For example, the flute and saxophone have nearly the same fingerings. The clarinet and saxophone have similar mouthpieces. And many of the brass instruments are fairly easy to switch back and forth between. Once you’ve started a second instrument, it can get addicting…you could find yourself with a hunger to learn them all! (I’m still working on that myself.)

If I could play any musical instrument, what would it be?

This is the most important question you could ask yourself. What do you WANT to learn? The answer to this means more than anything else above. Learning to play a musical instrument should be something you enjoy. If you don’t even want to learn the instrument, it won’t be a very positive experience. You may even get discouraged and quit, never returning to learn what you wanted to learn in the first place. Figure out what you really want to learn, and do what you can to make it happen.

I’m just wondering how many hubbers can play musical instruments?

OK, I’ll start of by saying that I’ve been playing guitar for about 30 years.
I’ve had one years experience 30 times

And I started playing banjo a couple of years ago.

I have a Takamine guitar, and a Fender Banjo.

I LOVE banjo music! I have a mountain dulcimer, although I haven’t dusted it off in a while. Hmm, maybe I will hub about it.

I only play mouth harp anymore. Got rid of the piano and gave my guitar to a friend. self taught except for the piano, had four years from excellent teacher many years ago.

I used to play the trumpet. Possible that I’d pick up the techinque again pretty quickly, I did play for many years.

It’s a pitch thing I guess. Though with singing I’m worse than useless

Well done Eric by the way. My ‘thing’ for a while now has been about learning the spanish guitar. I really should make a start.

I began piano lessons at age 11 but it lasted for the summer.I tried again at 14. In my 20s I tried again; and lessons lasted for 17 months.Basically,I had to learn mostly on my own. My sisters and I bought the melodica and I did well.We tried the xylophone,maracas and cowbells.They learned the recorder but I stuck with the piano.Presently I own a Yamaha keyboard.A few days ago I began music lessons again and that resulted in the hub Fifty Years:To Have And To Hold. The music teacher was having an anniversary so I interviewed them and used the information to write a hub. She is helping me to break old habits so that I can be a better organist. Thus far,I am enthusiastic and simply need to practice more.

I have owned a D28 copy Takamine I bought at Lewis’s Music store in Russel St Melbourne in 1976. I liked it so much I bought the D28 in 1977 in Detroit. I also had a twelve string Echo, my daughter has a Maton «Overlander» and my youngest a new Maton dreadnought with decent inbuilt pickups, I can’t remember the model, but was a bargain new last year at about AU$1800
We have the drum kit in the lounge room.

Piano a little and the triangle well, no formal lessons.

Self-taught guitar (acoustic mainly) and keyboard/piano. I’m rubbish at sight reading notes, but I can read them. I play by ear mainly and off tabs. Used to write/record my own songs but haven’t done that in a couple of years now.

You guitar guys rock. Any guitar ability is better than none, in my book.

I began as a trumpet player at the age of 9, and that’s still my favorite instrument to play. I had roughly 10 years of lessons. I enjoyed a moderately successful (albeit short lived) career. I taught myself the rest of the brass instrumants over the course of a few years, then some keyboard and guitar. Of all the instruments I learned on my own, the drum kit was probably the hardest. Getting hands and feet to do 4 things at once took some time to learn!

I can p;lay guitar and keyboard some. I am self taught for the most part on those. My passion is playing a bass guitar. I must say I have tasught myself very well over 30 years of playing bass.

I play a Fender Jazz Bass. I love the fender sound and the single coil pickups. We will be making our first CD soon so be looking for it. I am sure I will write a hub about it when it is time.

I’m starting to learn guitar now. Though I play bamboo flute b4.

Is someone teaching you or are teaching yoruself?

Actually nobody teaches me. But I learned by listening and watching others. I also have my notes. I think talent just comes out naturally. And guitar is painful at fingers and having back aches at times in the beginning. But flute is so relaxing you make music while just sitting.

Tha aching fingers will be with you for a while but eventually you will get used to it. Do you sit while playing? I can’t figure out why your back hurts when playing unless you have to actually hold the guitar up while playing.

yes i sit while I play. I got back ache when guitar is too big so I had the size that allows me to play it without body strain.

That’s why Maton made the «overlander» nice big sound, small guitar.

I can play the kazoo pretty well

It’s been a long time, but piano (lessons at first, later self)

I did try taking piano lessons BUT I got bored with it so sadly I play no instrument. Wanted to play the flute but I have sensitive hearing and it hurts my ears.

I can play a mean, blade of thick grass, placed between my to thumbs and just whistling away. Does this count. lol But on a serious note I enjoy all instruments and I started taking self taught piano lessons, but don’t got no piano no more.

Sorry you don’t have a piano bu they when will you have a concert for the blade of grass? lmao I would so pay to go see a concert like that!

I have played Piano since I was 5 years old and I have played it consistently, playing it is relaxing and I sit down at the Ivory keys and play it everyday.

I’ve played the piano since I was 4 years old and the guitar since I was 10 years old. I did have some piano lessons, but I’m self-taught on the guitar. I’m better at the guitar, but I like playing the piano more, so those around me just have to suffer through the mistakes.

Pretty much piano and guitar. But my Mom bought us a glockenspiel when we were little kids and I’m pretty darn nimble on that thing too!

Clarinet from 5th grade through 9th—dropped it to play basketball. Guitar since age 18, self taught, have owned various acoustics, nothing fancy: Wabash, Hohner (yeah, they actually had a guitar at one time), Yamaha, Takamine, one weird hybrid Gibson, now an Ibanez (currently in Guitar Prison, othewise known as the pawn shop).

Had a Gibson banjo for a while—heavy sucker but great sound.

Couple of harmonicas, but not exactly skilled on ’em.

I got into college on a marching band scholarship, playing the tuba. Not one of those nice lightweight fiberglass sousaphones, either. We had to hoist around the brass convertible uprights.

I’ve played piano since I was 4, sang as long as I can remember, took up brass and percussion in high school, and along the way I’ve tried pretty much every other thing that makes noise, barring anything with a reed that requires an actual embouchure. (I’d say I haven’t tried any reed instrument, but as I can strangle a tune out of the Uilleann pipes, that wouldn’t be true). I actually became proficient in the guitar, bass guitar, Celtic harp and tinwhistle.

I’ve had formal training in piano, percussion, tuba, vocal performance, and harp.

So, yes, I play a few musical instruments.

Anyone who has read all my hubs knows that I can play one song on a guitar. I have «Sparkling Stella» memorized. When I was in college a buddy and I used to sing and entertain. He played the guitar. When I thought I was too stoned or drinking too much I would borrow his guitar and attempt to play the song. If I got through the song I knew I wasn’t too stoned or too drunk and could continue to party. If i didn’t get through the song then I knew I had to stop smoking and drinking or risk being the guy dancing and stripping on the couch.
I used to be able to play «Beth» by Kiss on the piano, too. I can’t remember how to do that one. That one goes back to high school. I am a fan of Peter Criss.

I can do some interesting stuff on the bongos, too, if that counts. I can sing, too, if that counts. I was actually handed cash to sing in my younger days.

I’ve played piano since I was 3, but my main instrument is flute, which I’ve been playing since I was 9. I also play sax and clarinet. I took private lessons for years and was in all different types of ensembles. I still play with t band in NYC. Last year, I released an album of jazz flute music, which I composed. It was a lot of work, but well worth the effort!
