We decided to spend an evening watching TV. Here’s what we found out about Russian TV.

Spotlight on Russia looks at what’s on television

Did you know that TV in Russia is similar to TV in other European countries? We didn’t know what to expect when we read the programme guide. Then we saw Russian versions of lots of familiar shows like Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
Russian TV also has a lot of soap operas, as in almost every other place in the world, and we even recognised some soaps from the UK!
Russian television has over tty channels on the air and these are both public and private. One of the most popular channels is Channel One, where you can see The Voice. This is one of Russia’s most popular reality shows.
We saw lots of adverts for variety shows and comedy shows. These are very popular. Russians really like to laugh and they enjoy watching funny sketches and stand−up comedians. One of these kinds of programmes is the popular KVN. It is one of the best programmes to watch if you want to understand Russian humour. Even though we didn’t understand the language it was very funny to watch.
Of course there are also lots of American and European films on television. In fact, with so many different types of programmes we found it hard to choose!

I think people watch TV just to have a rest after a long working day. Some people really enjoy watching some TV programs they love. Also, we can watch TV to kill time waiting for something. For example, at the airport or waiting the doctor’s appointment I also watch TV.

Of course, teenagers choose the Internet. The Internet gives us everything: young people prefer finding out news, seeing films and playing computer games there. We don’t need an old-fashionable source of information like television. Almost all my friends don’t even have TVs in their rooms.

I don’t watch TV a lot. If I do it, I prefer documentary channels like Animal planet. They show very interesting and picturesque scenes about lives of animals of different continents.

I am not a big fan of watching TV as a way to spend my free time so my attitude to it is rather neutral.

With technology changing all the time, how can we keep up with all the latest gadgets? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a weekly TV programme that told us all about the latest technology, how it works, how much it costs and whether it is any good? Here’s the good news! There is a show like that and it’s called The Gadget Show.

The Gadget Show airs on Channel Five in the UK and it is also available on satellite TV and through the Internet via its website, http://www.channel5.com/shows/the_gadget_show/episodes. This popular show lasts for an hour and it is now in its tenth year.

The presenters of the show are Jon Bentley, Jason Bradbury, Ortis Deley and Amy Williams. Each week they actually test all the latest gadgets and tell viewers what is worth buying. There is a challenge each week for the presenters to test a certain gadget to the limits. Also, there is a test that judges an item on a number of levels to find the best product in a certain category. In addition, one lucky viewer each week wins all the latest gadgets and electronics in the programme’s competition.

So, if you want to learn about new technology or if you’d like to know the best brand (of the latest gadget) to buy, watch The Gadget Show.

Modern teenagers usually watch different entertainment, musical or sports shows. Some of them can put teenagers in the real world. But most of these TV shows can only kill the time. What about really useful intellectual shows that could be interesting for teenagers. Here’s the good news! There is a show like that and it is an intellectual University Challenge TV show called «Umniki i umnitsy». It airs on First Channel every week on Saturday. It’s author and all-time presenter is Yuri Vyazemski. It features young people competing with each other and answering different questions concerning History, Literature, Russian language, World Culture, Geography, Politics and Diplomacy. At the end of the season, some of the competitors can win a chance to enter MGIMO University without exams. Most of the questions are too difficult to answer for any teenager but that is the key point of this intellectual show. The show should be a real challenge for teenagers’ brains. It’s always useful to test your knowledge and to find out if you are so clever as those participants of TV show.

First of all, the link given in the student book is no more available. But I’ve found the actual link to The Gadget Show on the Channel 5 website. Here it is (https://www.channel5.com/show/the-gadget-show/). Trying to watch an episode on the Channel 5 website I faced the geoblock. You must be located in the UK to view any content from the Channel 5 website. But I was persistent in my intentions and I found this show on Youtube and managed to watch one episode.

I should say that the actual presenters’ team has changed. The show is currently presented by Craig Charles, Ortis Deley, Jon Bentley and Georgie Barrat. The episode I watched was about energy-saving gadgets. Here it is.

Presenters told about an amazing shower head specially designed to help reduce the time spent in the shower. This gadget is connected to an app via Bluetooth and it’s got lights indicators showing the efficiency of water usage. Then presenters tested a smart heating system that could manage your home heating in a more efficient way. At the end of the episode, presenters showed a kettle that could keep the water hot at least 2 hours.

I think The Gadget Show is very useful. You can find out how new gadgets really work and if they as good as they look.
