Studying at School: Subjects We Study

Children have different subjects at school. Some are fascinating for them and some are boring. In Maths pupils should learn to add, divide, multiply and subtract. In Literature they may write compositions and learn poems by heart. In Geography the teacher might show new countries on the globe and tell children about new cultures. In English children can improve their language skills. In German they can learn the pronunciation of difficult words.

What subject do you prefer the most?

We study many subjects at school, such as Maths, Ukrainian, English, Ukrainian Literature, World Literature, History, Geography, Biology, IT, PE, Art, Music and some others. All the subjects are compulsory.

In Maths we do with numbers. We do all sorts of mathematical calculations. We add numbers (ten plus five is fifteen), subtract numbers (eight minus four is four), multiply numbers (two times six is twelve) or divide numbers (ten divided by two is five).

In Ukrainian language we learn grammar rules and do lots of grammar exercises, write dictations and essays.

At our Literature classes we read and discuss interesting books and recite poems.

In History we learn about the things and people from the past. We can hear fascinating stories what life was like before. We read about heroes and battles. But the problem is that we must memorize lots of dates.

In Geography we learn about our planet, about other planets and stars. We learn about rivers, lakes, mountains, continents, oceans, countries and cities from all over the world. We need a map and a globe.

In Biology we get to know interesting facts about nature: all living creatures on our planet – plants, animals, people. We learn what they eat, where they live, how they grow. We do experiments sometimes. We read about endangered species and how to help them, about pollution of the environment and how to safe our planet.

At our lessons of foreign languages we develop our skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing, learn about customs and traditions as well. We learn words and phrases and also grammar rules.

In IT we learn everything about computers and how to use them. We are taught to type and store information, surf the Internet, make presentations, download information, pictures and music. It is fun because we sometimes play games.

In PE we really have fun because we play different sports. We have classes in the gym or on the sports ground. We need a PE kit: sneakers and special clothes.

In Music we are told about composers and styles of music. We have fun singing songs.

In Craft we make different things. Boys can do woodwork, pokerwork or metal work. Girls are taught cookery, embroidery, sewing and knitting.

At Art classes we are told about famous artists and are taught to draw and paint.

My favourite lesson is English. I am fond of doing projects and learning about English-speaking countries. At the lessons of English we can speak about animals and plants, about Earth and its problems, about countries and historic events. We sing songs and make presentations. It’s great that English helps me to learn about the world.

После этой фразы даже не стала читать дальше — уже идет дезинформация. С большой буквы предметы пишутся только в русифицированном английском и в русских экзаменах, а в «стандартном» английском названия школьных предметов и дисциплин пишутся как раз-таки с МАЛЕНЬКОЙ буквы (исключение составляют лишь названия языков). В заданиях международных экзаменов по английскому языку также все предметы пишутся со строчной буквы, если в ответе напишете по-другому, Вам это просто-напросто засчитают это за ошибку.

My name is Catherine, I am thirteen years old. I study at school number seven. My school is a three-storeyed building with a lot of classrooms, where we learn different subjects. The classrooms for the primary school are on the first floor and the classrooms for the high school are on the second and third floors.

Our school has two gymnasiums with all the necessary equipment. We often stay there after classes and play volleyball. Different sports competitions are held there.

There is also a swimming pool in our school, where we swim in hot weather. We have manual training lessons where boys do woodwork and girls learn how to sew and cook. All the classrooms of our school are spacious and light.

Everything is new in our school – desks, tables, chairs. We have laboratories for Physics and Chemistry where we conduct experiments. There are a lot of interesting books in our library and we often take them for reading. The food is always delicious in our canteen and it is always clean there. We also have a big assembly hall. Different competitions and events are held there.

Our classroom is on the third floor. Our form-mistress is a teacher of Biology. She knows her subject perfectly. We all love her not only as a teacher but also as a person. She gives us pieces of advice. Our class is the friendliest at school. On weekends we often go to museums, theatres, exhibitions, and at the beginning of vacations we go to the mountains.

I miss school during the holidays. I love my school very much.

I trust him a lot, and I’m sure that I can rely on him in any situation. He never lets people down. Misha is only 16 but he is very responsible — he finishes whatever he starts. He’s got only one shortcoming. He is a bit stubborn; nevertheless he is pleasant to deal with. Misha’s an only child and his parents love him very much. His father is a lawyer. He is the most brilliant man I’ve ever met. He knows everything there is to know about the law. His mother is a music teacher. No wonder Michael is so talented. He’s got a very good ear for music. He likes jazz and plays the piano very well. We spend a lot of time together. We often watch video or listen to music. Sometimes we go to theatre, or walk around the centre of the city, visiting small cafes, museums, art galleries, and shops. We talk for hours about all sorts of things (politics, love, teachers, and girls). We discuss films, television programmes, books. I never quarrel with Misha. But if there is some misunderstanding between us we try to make peace as soon as possible. What I like best about him is that he is always willing to help and share his knowledge, thoughts, and feelings. I respect him for his fairness, strong will, intellect, and modesty. I miss Misha when we don’t see each other for a long time. Without him I would feel lonely and uncomfortable. Our friendship helps me feel strong and sure of myself.

Моя школа не очень большая, но все классы уютные и светлые. Я рада быть ученицей именно в этой школе.

Мои одноклассники довольно дружелюбные и умные ребята. Всего нас 19 человек в классе: 8 мальчиков и 11 девочек. Я помню, что у нас были и другие ученики несколько лет назад, но потом один из них сменил школу, а другие двое переехали в другой город. Иногда мы с ними общаемся. Все дети в нашем классе совершенно разные, со своим характером и хобби. Но все-таки мы очень организованные ребята. Кому-то нравится читать книги или писать стихотворения. А кто-то просто без ума от спортивных игр. Есть у нас ребята, кто красиво поёт и танцует. Когда в школе организуется концерт или другое мероприятие, мои одноклассники всегда рады поучаствовать. Когда мы были младше, наша учительница часто помогала нам. Не каждому хватало смелости выйти на сцену с песней или танцем. Сегодня мы стали старше и почти все делаем сами.

У моих одноклассников довольно высокие отметки по предметам. Не все мы, конечно, отличники, но мы очень помогаем друг другу. Мы всегда можем объяснить какую-то тему другому учащемуся и иногда даём списать домашнее задание.

Когда мы не в школе, мы также проводим время вместе. Мы можем организовать вечеринку у кого-нибудь дома, устроить пикник или поездку в другой город. Нам нравится общаться и обмениваться мнениями. Если кому-то нужна помощь или совет, то ребята всегда рядом.

Но мы не всегда были такими. Когда я была младше, то помню, как мы часто ругались. И вообще мы были порой ужасными детьми. Каждый день кто-то обязательно плакал. Но те времена прошли, мы подросли и очень изменились. Наша учительница нам очень помогла и поддержала. Мы поняли, что мы — одна команда. И это на самом деле так. Perfect School

My school is pretty big and bright. We have here a lot of pupils and teachers. I study different subjects and I really enjoy my time here. I have met here many interesting and good people, I have known many useful facts and still I would like to discover new things about the life.

If I could choose my perfect school would be closer to my home. Every day I spend half an hour or so to get here. In winter it’s not easy for me.

I would like to study some particular subjects. For example, sociology and psychology are really interesting for me. Also in my perfect school I would study English every day. English is international language and it’s very important today.

What is more I would like to organize my schedule by myself. I am an owl and I would like to start little bit later and move important subjects after 11 a.m

It should be better selection of food for lunch. I am not keeping to a diet, but I like to eat a lot of salad and fresh juice.

Instead of lessons of physical education I would like to go to swimming pool and dancing school. It is more interesting and healthier I guess. All pupils are different and I don’t really like exercises and basketball.

I guess my list of wishes is very long. Perfect school is like one dream. What is important for me may not be important and interesting for my classmates. But this is how I see my perfect school. Who knows maybe in future schools in our country will improve and children will attend schools with bigger pleasure.

Я — ученица одиннадцатого класса, школы № 9. Я хотела бы рассказать вам о нашей школьной жизни.
Я хожу в школу пять раз в неделю. Занятия начинаются в 8 часов утра и продолжаются до 3 часов дня. У нас бывает шесть или семь уроков в день. Мы изучаем много разных предметов: русский, английский, французский языки, литературу, историю, географию, биологию, физику, химию, математику, программирование и информатику. Мои любимые предметы — языки, литература и история. Я получаю хорошие оценки по этим предметам.
Школьный год разделен на четыре периода, называемых четвертями. Год начинается 1 сентября, известного как День знаний и заканчивается в мае. После каждой четверти есть каникулы.
У каждого ученика есть дневник, в который учитель ставит полученные учеником оценки. I am 14 years old, and it is difficult for me to say whether my future will be more happy than my past. Moreover, school takes so much time that I hardly have time for anything else. Summer is the only time when I can forget about school. But it is impossible to do so. Little by little I start to understand that school plays a very important part in the life of every person, and knowledge gained at school is the key to the future success or failure.
School years may certainly be fairly happy. However, there are a lot of problems even today connected with school life and the formation of a personality. People think differently about this time of their life experience. In my opinion optimism or pessimism in the attitude to school years is equally wrong. School is the place where almost everything happens with a person for the first time. School years are the time of great expectations and great emotions. Not all emotions are always pleasant. School is the first true experience of the real life. At school a person makes his first friends, meets his first love, confronts the first betrayal. Here at school the person reads the first book and writes the first composition. He acquires basic knowledge of physics, mathematics, literature, history, biology, etc. But here at school the person not only accumulates knowledge, school helps the pupils to get on in life and become successful.
In a way it is a kind of society in miniature. School society is a model of real society with its advantages and disadvantages. School lessons are not given by teachers only. The harsh reality of everyday school life teaches pupils a lot of lessons which will be useful in their later life.
School plays a very important social role. It provides high-quality education for pupils between the ages of 6 and 17. It brings together children with different interests and experience. School offers pupils the opportunities to develop their abilities, satisfy their curiosity, and realise themselves as individuals. At school pupils are taught to be responsible, gallant, and honest. Pupils should be aware that generosity and sympathy might be as important as moral virtue. School helps pupils to establish for themselves a set of convictions and beliefs. Here at school pupils can compare themselves with each other in terms of academic ability and athletic achievements. Teachers are knowledgeable in their subjects. School provides high-quality conditions that will enable pupils and teachers to make the most of their time. Knowledge acquired at school enables pupils either to continue their education or start working.
Now I want to say some words about my school. My school is located in the centre of our city. Set up before World War II, it values its traditions, which, however, have changed in the course of time. When I started to go to school it was an old building with a garden around it. Every year on the first of September all the pupils and teachers of our school gather in the forecourt for a meeting at which the beginning of a new academic year is proclaimed. After the meeting the pupils go to their classrooms. The classrooms are very large. In our school mere are lour specialised classrooms. The first is a Biology classroom with a lot of flowers and two exotic trees. By taking care of the flowers and trees we learn to love and protect nature. The second is the Literature classroom. It resembles a library with a lot of bookcases around the walls and the portraits of the classics of Russian literature. The third is the History classroom. There are maps and archaeological artefacts in this classroom. I like history because it tells us about the events of the past. Most of all I like the English classroom. On the wall of the English classroom there are posters with London places of interest: Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, and the Tower of London. There are some portraits of the British and American writers such as Shakespeare, Byron, Hemingway, and Mark Twain there. Our English teacher teaches us not only the language of the Englishmen but their culture, history and traditions as well. By learning more about the life style of other peoples we start to appreciate customs and traditions of our country. During our English classes we read and translate texts, discuss some English books, and listen to the tape-recorder.
I spend much time at school. But at school we do not only study. We have some extracurricular activities as well. They are part of school life. Our social and cultural life is well organised. We have different clubs. We often go to the museums and theatres. At school I have many interesting subjects and they are all different. My favourite subjects are English, English literature and History. I like to learn new English words, dramatise texts and dialogues. I like to discuss interesting problems in English during our English classes. Everything that is connected with Great Britain is very important to me. I like my classmates, and we always spend our time together. I am sure that eventually they will be ready to enter our society as full-fledged citizens.

– What is one of the greatest problems of school life?
– One of the greatest problems of school life is connected with communication. There are about 30 boys and girls in a class, and they have to live and learn together for more than a decade. Every person has his own interests and attitudes to everything. It is very important for classmates to become friends. Sometimes some of them become real friends for the rest of their lives. In some cases pupils cannot establish contacts and good relations with their classmates. The pupils who accept all the difficulties of school life and break the wall of misunderstanding with their classmates are happy at school.

– What can you say about your school building?
– Our school has been recently rebuilt. Now it is a modern four-storied building. On the ground floor one can find administrative offices, a gym and a cloakroom. The assembly hall is on the third floor. On the first floor there are primary school classes. Teenagers are not allowed to spend time on the first floor, because primary school pupils are too small. On other floors there are different classrooms.

– What do you usually do during the breaks?
– Breaks at school are not very long. They can last from 5 to 20 minutes. Sometimes we hardly have enough time to move from one classroom to another. Usually we talk or play. During one of the longest breaks we have lunch, in early autumn, and late spring we can play in the school yard.

– What do you talk about with your classmates?
– Usually we express our views about the books we read, computer games we play or films we have seen or want to see. We discuss our plans for the weekends and decide how to spend our free time.

– Do you work hard at school?
– Yes, I do. I work very hard. I never miss classes and I always do my homework. Sometimes it really takes several hours to do it, but I do not complain. I am really interested in what I learn at school. Moreover, I understand perfectly well that in the nearest future this knowledge will help me a lot.

– Do you have many friends at school?
– There are 28 boys and girls in our class. We are all good friends. Nevertheless, I have a few good friends. There are six of us in our company. We usually spend our free time together. We meet after classes, and go to the museums and cinemas. We have a very good time together, especially at the weekends.

– Some people when they grow older do not like to speak about their school years. What do you think about it?
– School years are connected with hard mental activity. That is why some people don’t like to speak about them. For self-assured people, whose character was moulding at that time, the recollection of their school years can be very pleasant. All unpleasant moments of their school life they present with humour. And this is the key to their success. This very attitude has been worked out at school and by school.
