Exercise: What ____ you ____ (do) yesterday morning? I ____ (study) for an exam.

I’m a little confused about which tense to use in the first part of this sentence. I know that the correct answer is to use Past Continuous:

Correct answer: What were you doing (do) yesterday morning? I was studying (study) for an exam.

But, why grammatically is wrong to use Past Simple?

What did you do (do) yesterday morning? I was studying (study) for an exam.

For the answer, «was studying» is more likely for something that occupied a relatively long period of time so recently.

«I was walking to school when I saw the dog.»

But the difference between the past continuous and simple past when they have no other information attached to them is sometimes very subtle in English and not easy to explain to a learner. Especially because (as with so much in English grammar) we often ignore the rules.

For example: a mother comes home and sees rubbish all over the house. She says to her son «The house is a complete mess! What were you doing here yesterday?!» Unfortunately it means (in practical terms) almost the exact same thing as «The house is a complete mess! What did you do here yesterday?!» What she wants to know is simply what happened.

The clearest way to separate them is to use examples where you must use only one type of past tense because more information is requested or added in the sentence:

This question MUST be answered with the past continuous because she is asking what was happening at the time she phoned. Her son cannot reply «I ate dinner when you phoned»; he has to reply «I was eating dinner when you phoned». Again- an event in the past (eating) was occurring when another event occurred in the past (the mother phoned the house).

So the problem with your sentences is simply that there isn’t enough added information for you to decide if a sentence is wrong or right- it completely depends on a) how the questioned is asked, and b) understanding WHY a question is being asked. Is it «wrong» to answer a question posed in the past continuous form with a simple past answer? Yes. But do we do it anyway? Yes. Because sometimes it is a way to tell someone to «Mind your own business».

Q. Suspicious mother: «What were you doing today?» (Because I think you were wasting time instead of doing your studies)
A. Annoyed son: I studied then went out (Mind your own business).

When I say it’s subtle I do mean «subtle»- let’s say a jealous woman goes away on business and leaves her husband alone for a week. If she asks «What we’re you doing while I was away?» you can assume from the context that what she means is «Are you having an affair?» If she asked «What did you do while I was away?» It sounds more like a genuine, simple question. The problem is the husband might decide to answer BOTH types of the question only with the simple past.

But be aware- we often play around with these rules when telling someone about an event that took place:

«So I’m sitting there eating my dinner when suddenly the doorbell rings. «

In grammatically correct English this ought to be : «So I was sitting there eating my dinner when suddenly the doorbell rang. «

Don’t worry- most languages have these issues and we all have to go through it. In Persian the past subjunctive is a nightmare for an English-speaker to learn.

Best advice: read as many past continuous phrases online as possible. Detective novels are a great source for the English past tense because they involve so much dialogue about the past. Agatha Christie!

There is a huge difference in English between «The correct use of tenses» and «How we actually use tenses». Learn the formal «correct» versions but be prepared to hear the idiomatic versions and why we use them.
