It’s the sickening question so many rape survivors are asked and sadly, one they torture themselves over. It’s also the name of a powerful new exhibition in Brussels, aiming at dispelling these myths around rape.

The harrowing exhibition, “What were you wearing?” recreates 18 exact outfits worn by people when they were sexually assaulted. Each is displayed with a quote from the rape survivor.

“I was so confused that all I wanted to do was leave my brother’s room and go back to watching the cartoon,” reads one, next to a small blue kids t-shirt with a rainbow printed on it.

“My stepfather would abuse me after school before my mother came home,” reads another next to a school outfit.

“I had my police uniform on and was armed. It didn’t make any difference,” another says, next to an officer’s uniform.

There are also tracksuit bottoms, pajamas and dresses.

Project manager Yasmina El Moutouk told BBC, victims were often asked by the courts, family and friends what they were wearing.

“The victim feels guilty because she asks herself, what do you mean by ‘what were you wearing that day?’”

“It’s as if we are making her responsible for what happened and so she becomes both the assaulter and the victim.

The exhibition is being held from Jan. 8 until the 20th at the Maritime Community Centre in Molenbeek.

Проект What were you wearing посвящен проблеме насилия над женщинами и реализован в 50 странах.

what are you wearing for?

a cyberpunk fashion show

In the recent past, we underwent changes in the way we interact with others and the environment.

The global pandemic has triggered an economic and sanitary crisis, with extreme mobility controls, social distancing and corporations pressuring governments. We now find ourselves into a classic cyberpunk scenario. The virtualization of social interaction has gone deeper and settled into a mixed reality that pushes us to configure our meta-identity.

These circumstances made us develop new habits and modalities that directly affect all areas of life, including our appearance on digital excursions. This pavilion brings together the work of artists who explores fashion not only as a way of expressing style but also as a study of artificial personality.

What are you wearing for? it is not only an invitation to fantasize, but also to reflect on the impact of these sudden changes in societal behavior. What was once science fiction has become our contemporary existence.
