Take a chance on making your life small.
Do you ever feel like you’re always on the end of a snap-the-whip line?
Never quite up at the front, seemingly always on the receiving end of excessive momentum where tiny movements and moments are made huge and overpowering by the time it gets to where I’m at.
Money snaps the whip.
When people are asked what they’d do if they won a million dollars, there are usually grandiose plans and extravagant purchases and a life made bigger and I think they must be fools. A million dollars would allow me to make my life smaller.
“If I had a million dollars and continued to live exactly as I do now,” I told my friend, “I’d never have to work again. I probably would work some, but I would have the weight of having to work removed.”
If I had a million dollars (the stand-in amount for “more money than I’ll ever see at once”), I tell myself I’d:
Tip foolishly large amounts
Read more, and late into the evening
Go out for wandering walks that end in sketching and writing
Paint more
Stop reading fine print
Savor simple things
Enjoy a warm bed on a cold morning, no rush
Anonymously give money to people in need
Stay up late when creativity strikes
Drink tea and read the paper in the morning
Have a garden with vegetables and flowers and herbs
Go to the library for no apparent reason
Go to the gym mid-morning after the rush, and take my time
Curl up with cocoa and a mystery on a cold winter day
Send anonymous checks to people in a financial tough spot
Play my violin and piano and clarinet during the day, for hours
Bake bread and desserts and give to friends
Volunteer to help at my favorite organizations
Live where there is less noise, maybe a small cabin away from town
Not worry that bills won’t get paid
Fill all of my blank journals with crazy ideas and strange sketches
Stop weighing everything in terms of a monetary value or cost
Give more money to my favorite charities
Rent an office, put my name on the door and use it purely to play office
Write letters on paper and mail to my entire address book
Create and write and draw for the joy of it
Stop the freelance jobs that I don’t love doing
Generously help my family when they need money
Sit in silence and just think about various things
Finish sewing and art projects I’ve started
Keep the computer turned off for days
Take random road trips just because
Read the Wall Street Journal in its entirety, taking up several hours
Look out the window and observe for hours
Enjoy time out with friends without a running checkbook balance in my head
Attend all interesting local conferences and events
Go exploring with a camera
Work for fun, and for principle, not for obligation
Write and blog for no one but myself
Get lost in a bookstore for hours, no guilt
Nearly all of these have no unaffordable price tag. They do not require much money to accomplish. Most are choices I could make every day. But they are all things that require time.
Unless you are enslaved by it, money gives you more time. Without money, your time is not your own.
I’ve chosen to use my time to earn more money, and squeezed these other things out. I cannot justify frittering away time on purely pleasurable things when I have never been a high earner and am only getting older with a reduced opportunity to earn. I never know when the income may stop coming.
Not having a lot of money (or coming from a history of it) causes you to live in fear, dread, and desperation. You would do anything to put distance between yourself and a have-nothing existence.
So I’m up late and up early, tired and burned out, trying to earn and save and plan for the worst. Every moment is working, the computer burning my eyes and wearing out my hands and making me loathe it.
This is not unique to me. I am not special. There is no shortage of weary people working working working every moment of the day, burning through the time allotted to them on this earth.
With a million dollars, I’d cease striving. I’d slow down. I’d return to analog. I’d stop trying to change the world, and just try to change my small world and affect the people in it. I’d stop pushing myself to bring “110%” to the day, disguised as excellence and good character and good old fashioned American drive, when all it really is, is poor choices.
As it is, the closest I can get to having a million dollars isn’t close at all.
Money has enslaved me because I let it and am too afraid to stop what I’m doing.
I don’t want to feel like money is up at the front of the line, snapping the whip with worry and “what if” and sending me reeling and tumbling across the landscape of my life’s timeline.

There’s an old joke people tell around here. One farmer asks another, «What would you do, if you won a million dollars?» The other farmer thinks for a moment, then says, «I guess keep farming until the money runs out.»
I didn’t give up very much to become a full-time writer (because I had been saving for this for a long time — the closing of the site where I worked just accelerated things by a couple of years). We dropped our standard of living just a bit. If I won a million dollars, we could move back up to the standard of living that we had when I was getting paid a salary. We had also been looking for houses, and have had to put that on-hold indefinitely. (I want a small house within walking distance of downtown. I’ve got plans to make it super energy-efficient.) Winning a million dollars would make buying a house possible.
Other than that, I don’t expect winning a million dollars would change my life a whole lot. I pretty much like my life just as it is — why screw it up?

I would pay off student loans and then buy a house, though in this market I might wait a couple of years, until we know more of what is actually going to happen with real estate. I would invest a large chunk of the rest of it, though I have no idea how, off the top of my head. That much money is beyond what I know how to invest right now, so I’d read some good books and talk to some good people.
The most important thing (at least to me!) that I’d do with it, though, is use it as an opportunity to quit my job. I have a pretty complex business idea in mind that would play off of my writing, art, and people skills, and I’d focus on that now instead of going slowly at it, as I am now.

Sadly, these days, a million isn’t really that much, so it wouldn’t go as far as I’d like. Here goes:
The rest I’d take in cash, put in a wheel barrow, roll it in to my bank branch, dump it in front of my personal banker’s desk, and say «Look at all this. I just don’t know what to do with it — can you think of something?» (Based on a running joke between the two of us.)

Assuming it is AFTER taxes, I’d like to start a small family-support office in my hometown. I’d staff some counselors and support workers and contract with the state to assist families in the area.
I’d also like to buy a few hundred acres of farmland to rent out. The land would generate some passive income while leaving something for my children’s inheritance.

I would pay off all of my mortgages and debt. I would buy a home for a mother. I would donate 10% to charity.
I would also purchase additional investment properties to provide future income. I would invest about 20%.
I’m debt-free, so I’d probably buy Berkshire-Hathaway.

My kids would have two stay at home moms- because at the level of financical consumption we live, a million would be enough for us. My hubby mught not agree- but we could afford for her to work instead of me if that was her hang up (my job pays more, so I’m the working mom). I would have time to get my nest the way I want it- and to build a treehouse with my son like he’s been wanting.
I would pick up the volunteer work at my church that my mom had to walk away from recently— I’d be busier doing that sort of stuff as my «job» in life- a philanthropist with my time.
I’d have time to write and have my own blog instead of wasting bandwidth on others— if I earned any money from ads on my blog, I’d donate it to other bloggers.
Around this point I would probably be talking to the IRS, trying to explain to them how I magically aquired a million tax-free dollars (since the IRS general wants to collect taxes on my income). I could possibly go to jail or have my accounts frozen, depending on where I got the money from.
Assuming all that works out, a lot of extended family members that I don’t know too well would probably start hitting me up for cash, especially the unemployed when with their great «business ideas». That would end up with a lose/lose situation for me, because I would either lose a lot of cash on their schemes or end up being known as rich snob of the family.

That’s exactly what happens! I related to your comment so much, I had to respond.
With all of that goes, a million dollars isn’t enough anymore. Uncle Sam gets half when you add it all up. You pay taxes on everything you buy, and you don’t qualify for any of these handouts that most people get including these stimulus checks. I could write a book on this subjects. When you do have the million dollars all of this stresses you out so much that you really can’t enjoy the half that you came away with.
I’m also debt-free but I could use that kind of money to get out of my terrible marriage, fund my retirement account and put my kids through state college with a little wise investing.
If I suddenly had a million dollars tax-free my husband and I would pay off our debt, take a modest vacation, possibly buy a small house (now that we live in a more affordable area), and invest the rest.

Let’s see. first, I would put enough in the bank to pay taxes on it (if not a tax-free million). Second, get someone to arrange a smallish cruise ship to go around the world and during the trip have poker pros holding various workshops. Oh, I’d also hold back enough for my boyfriend and I to enter the World Series of Poker twice, then I’d quit my job and spend time figuring out how to make this money make money for me. 🙂

We are essentially debt free, so that wouldn’t be an issue. I would share a portion with my children, parents, and siblings. After that I would give some to the school library at my children’s elementary school and the school library where I work. School library budgets are so small that a little will go a long way. After that, I would purchase a hybrid or alternative energy car. The next step would be to incorporate green energy into my house. It is 100 years old, so the boards it is built with are amazingly strong. There is no reason to waste the resources that are already in the house to build something else. Then, if there is anything left, invest.
I’d probably keep clipping coupons and living frugally, anyway.

First off, 10% goes to charity. Some of that would go to my church. All of the missionaries I support would get a big gift. A couple of missionaries that I would like to support would get picked up for regular support.
Second, I’d pay off my mortgage to allow me to be debt free. And, at some point soon after that, I’d put in new windows throughout my house to help make it more energey efficient.
For fun, I’d buy out everything on my Amazon wish-list, sign up to go to Space Camp the following summer and hire some friends to make some other of my friends and me a really nice dinner.
I’d also hire a good financial planner/accountant/tax advisor person to help me figure out how to manage the money with the intent of helping to fund my nephews’ college educations and increaseing the changes that I can live debt free for the rest of my life.
The rest would be invested 50/50 between some «serious» investments that would have reliable results (stock/bond investing) and also some unusual investments. I’d probably start a business with some of it, perhaps a recording studio or some other music-oriented business. This would keep me from pretending that I’m idly rich, and yet would allow me to start up a new career in a field I love even more than my current field. Because my mortgage and future would be secured, I wouldn’t need to pay myself too large a salary for it to work out well.
I would pay off my remaining debt, pay off my parents loans that they took out for my education, pay them back for that accident I had when I was 15.
After that, I would buy myself a plane ticket to sub Saharan Africa and start a foundation that would help with education as well as maintaining their cultures, and live the rest of my days very, very happily.

I would pay off the debt I have (school loans and daughter’s braces), buy the house in the mountainsthat my wife wants, replace my 12 year old truck, and then invest the rest for retirement. Other than life would go on pretty much the same as usual only with a bit more peace of mind.

Seriously, here’s my plan, which I’ve considered for years.
1) Pay off student loans
2) Pay off mortgage
3) Invest 50% of remainder for retirement
4) Invest 25% of remainder for children’s college funds
5) Invest 25% into home updating/remodeling

First, I’d pay off my school loans and put enough aside to pay for the rest of this year, grad school, and living expenses during that time. I’d also pay off my parents’ house and possibly my sister’s loans. I’d also go on a relatively small shopping spree; replace my broken laptop and buy a few other things I’ve had my eye on (some new clothes, a Wii, some nice Christmas presents for my friends.) I’m not sure if I’d quit my job or not; I just got hired (as a cashier) and I’d feel bad leaving just before the super-busy holiday season.
I’m not too sure what I would do with the rest. Probably put it in an account with a good interest rate and hope I got enough from it to live on, so I wouldn’t have to worry too much about money. As much as I’m looking forward to it, my future career probably isn’t going to make me rich.

The following two things are very important. I would take my wife out to a good dinner and then put the rest into a trust that could only be accessed by my grand-children for home buying and college, and forget about it.
I know what it’s like to not value what you’ve been given, and I am not mature enough for such a gift to not effect me. I couldn’t take it and use it without damaging my development.

I’m afraid that wouldn’t do it. Since Apple has starting using Linux/UNIX as the base for its OS, there are plenty of viruses and spyware for Macs too.
I’d figure out exactly how much I was dealing with, after taxes and get some advice on what to do with it.
I would invest much of it, and at somepoint (maybe now or later after said investments would pay off) pay off some student loans because even with a million dollars, paying off loans with 2.45% interest don’t make sense or cents. I’d want to help out my parents and give to charities, plus set up investments/give outright to my church. I’d consider paying down my mortgage, and maybe helping out my brothers with some of their needs (not wants necessarily). I’d like to buy a second home in the «city» vs. a cabin in the woods, and take my husband on a couple of great vacations. Maybe start a business too.
I guess the real question is when I’d get this million dollars. in forty years it wouldn’t do as much. Ah, inflation.

Ooh, this would be too amazing! I would pay off all of our debts, then set the remainder up in a trust account with a mix of investments (and put the trust in the hands of a professional financial adviser because I’m not competent to properly diversify that amount of money). I would have a percentage of the return paid out to us each month, and add the remainder of the return to the trust’s principal so that it will continue to grow. I’m sure my husband would prefer to continue working no matter what, but I would think about becoming a stay-at-home mom when my kids start going to school.
No one looking at me would be able to tell that anything had changed, because really, nothing would. I would just be able to act on a few things I have already planned, and wouldn’t even do them much differently than I would if I was working steadily again, just a little more quickly. I know the meaning of ‘enough’ and that million would be ‘enough.’

What would you do if, for example, you won a million dollars in the lottery? Never mind your chances of winning are just slightly better than the chances of being abducted by aliens. Even so, winning the lottery is a favorite daydream for a lot of us.
If I had a million dollars, I’m guessing I would definitely crave for more. Perhaps I would try to discover a way to double the million, preferably not using anything against the law. It seems that no matter how much money you have, it’s never enough. Lots of hands are reaching out, even now, but there’d be many more reaching out if I had a million dollars!
Nevertheless, I’d admit that having a million dollars would be a lot of fun. I wonder how much of a million would be left after tax? Yes, I’d most likely give at least a tenth of it to the church and some to the charity. I’d even give some to help the folks who can’t help themselves, but, unless I suddenly became some kind of financial genius, all that money would disappear quickly.
Of course, if I had a million dollars, I would spend a lot of it on myself, hopefully not too selfishly, but first of all, half of what was left would be safely stored at a bank in Swiss for future use. After the money was stored, what I spent with the rest of it would be history. Perhaps I’d get a few houses in the tropical islands, a couple of new computers, laptops, and walk-in closets in each, advanced payment for the CDs I wished to own.

I’d also to invest in a six-year trip around the world with a year for each continent and three more months in Antarctica, and loads of material things would satisfy me, but who knows what I’ll have come up with by then. After I’d gotten what I wanted for the time being, I would give some of the remaining money to my family and relatives for them to split among themselves, and perhaps some of it on educational benefits for me. If I were older, though, I would certainly need to spend it on my family, on cars and groceries, and all the required expenses of an adult. It hurts my head to think about all the numerous possibilities – and, the problems, of having a million dollars.
Yet then, again, with bizarre things like this, only God knows. Would I not be obsessive with my money and live a normal life, or would I think I deserved everything because I had a million dollars? I could go on and on about what I’d do with the money, but truthfully, I would think about the money and what worth it had for me. After all, I’d be the one to own the million dollars, and what I do with it would be my choice and no one else’s. If you ask me, I’d like to keep things simple and not think too much about the possibilities. I’d like to think that I’d simply be a million dollars richer! All right, so send in the million, and we’ll see how I do.

How would you use the money?
Honestly, I would keep whatever I need for college, some for my family, and give the rest away to charities and environmental organizations as soon as I could. I’ve heard too many lottery failure stories, where the winner has no idea what to do, succumbs to a life of excess and- boom- bankrupt in a matter of years. Or the people they know start bugging them for money and they destroy all their relationships and live lavish hermit lives until they die.
BUT if I worked for the money, and earned it with my own hands, I would probably put it in the bank and watch it grow. c:
Sorry but you sound exactly like one of the people who receive large windfalls and still end up broke as you stated nothing about saving whatever windfall you have. By saving it, you could give to more charities over time if that’s what you really desired.
I would invest the money in order to create a good cashflow, honestly
I’d divide it into 5 categories:
Firstly, buying the book «Tax Evasion for Dummies».
Then investing some of the money into my new start-up business Hollow Leg Store, which means a lot to me and I hope develops into something that can make a meaningful contribution to the world.
Thirdly, giving to other causes and companies that I respect the morals of and want to support.
Fourthly, I would travel. Exploring new spaces and cultures always keeps my perspective fresh.
And lastly, I would put the rest away— you never know when you might need it, and I tend to squirrel away savings for the unexpected. (and the occasional rainy day) 
I would just do three things, travel, read, eat, sleep and repeat.

I would buy a used house with some used land. I would put a large sum of it into my bank, ten percent would go to my church, some of it would go into the stock market, some into bonds, some into the United States treasury, and some into cryptocurrencies and perhaps other investments. I would also place some money to anyone I felt somehow indebted to.
Give it to my closest kin to buy whatever. They put me on an allowance.

With my free time (which I would now have a lot of) I would do fun things like learn guitar, learn foreign languages by going to the foreign country, take up windsurfing, visit film festivals in foreign countries, and other fun hobbies that I don’t have the time or money for now. I would also be good to my friends and family.
A million dollars is no longer very much in the real scheme of things. It wouldn’t even buy you a house in most parts of London.
I would probably put most of it on deposit and use the income to cut down a bit on the hours I work. I would try some riskier investments with the rest, in the hope of perhaps striking lucky.
The money would give me some more free time to do things I would like to do, but it would not have a major impact on my way of life.
A million dollars would enable me to buy a lovely old farmhouse in Wales with a little bit of land. I’d rent out the land but keep chickens in the courtyard. I’ve always wanted to keep chickens. Any remaining money would help to pay for my daughter’s education so she wouldn’t be saddled with too much debt later on.
Obviously I’d pay off all my bills, as that goes without saying. Then I’d invest and put most of into my Roth IRA, and bank accounts for safe keeping. Sure, I might splurge like 10k on stuff, while also planning a trip to see the world. But other than that, that would be pretty much it.
I would split it in 5 different categories:

I would talk to an investment manager and a tax person for advice, think about what they said while I pay off my student loans separate more than enough money to pay for the rest of my schooling, computer, and books. Then I would buy a reliable car that will last ten years with basic maintenance, focus on school, invest the rest. Tithe 10% and donate 10% to a worthy nonprofit making a positive impact in their neighborhoods helping people, more than likely half for human service and the other half for medical support.

He will reinvest this 1 million to multiply, but for this you will want to choose 3 types of investment: insurance, medium risk and speculation. Most of the risk no longer exists.
I will invest half of the million dollars in a business. Then, I will pay my bills or loans or whatever debts I currently have. It’s better for me to free myself from debts in order to have a quite peaceful mind. Next, I will do charity works. I want to work hands on for these charity works so I can make sure that all funds will all be given to the needy. The rest of my money, I will save in my bank.
I would invest it all in Mutual Funds and see it grow in 15-20 years.
I would probably do 50% in mutual funds and then use the rest towards doing things that I love.
Build a sandcastle hotel in Colombia S. America. Already started investors now.
I will save a considerable amount of money. Invest some in real estate and then, I will go on a vacation.
I will prefer to invest partly in some Govt securities and partly in mutual funds. This will help to spend the life comfortably.
I would keep it somehow and pretend I didn’t have it. Its too much trouble to deal with, yet it would be nice to know I had it.
I might let someone I could trust, a brother or father, handle it and perhaps try to grow it, if that is possible with out risking loosing it.
Actually, these days, a million is not much.
I would also like to to hand it down to my family when I die.
Buy a house outright, give 10% to my church, invest a good portion, and I think I’d strongly consider buying my mom’s house so she doesn’t have to pay for it for the rest of her life.

That sounds nice. 
Would not hand it over to the greedy. Would further my art and urban farming projects.
Firstly, I will buy all the necessities in a luxury version for living. Then, invest 1/4 of the remaining money on real estate or whatsoever looks promising. Plus, spending the rest on establishing educational non-profit org.

Anyhow, since I’m inclined to think that money should work, I’d probably spend around a fifth of the sum and put the remainder into setting up my own business or probably buying a share in somebody else’s business. I definitely wouldn’t spend all of the money on expensive cars, cottages and stuff like that. I take the view that luxury must be earned but not gained without any effort whatsoever.

That could be a house that has previously been split into smaller flats (really common with large townhouses), with several of them being for sale at the same time, through different estate agents.

Do they split up houses into smaller apartments in those luxurious cottages?
Which luxurious cottages? 
Generally, if a seller can make more profit by splitting a property up into flats and selling them separately than if they sold the whole property as-is (including coverinig the cost of the conversion), then they will do so.
