The climate should make people think more about our lifestyle and our inheritance for the future generations. Young people like Greta Thunberg try to draw attention to some ecological problems and help to save the planet for the future.

Saint Petersburg also has some environmental problems. There are different kinds of environmental pollution like air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution here. Woods around the city are full of used plastic bottles and cans. Such litter also can be found in various rivers, channels and lakes. Road traffic, airport, railroads, manufacturing plants, construction and demolition also cause noise pollution. People say that the latest is the attribute of a big city life.

Everyone can contribute in our environment. We can try to cut down on our consumption, separate waste and do not waste water while brushing our teeth or washing the dishes. When we are aware of what we can do we can try our best and make a difference.

That’s all that I wanted to tell you about environmental problems.

An eco-friendly means of transport

A reason for global warming

Recycling is becoming easier and more widespread. Governments support companies that recycle waste. Also people prefer to buy things from companies that make their products from recycled materials. Reports say that people worldwide are starting to care more about what happens to waste products. For example, now Americans recycle almost 35% of their waste, while in the 1990s the percentage was much smaller.

In autumn 2004 a new body was created in Russia to protect the country’s natural resources. It’s called the Federal Ecological Service. The aims of the new institution are the following: to prevent environmental pollution and to control industrial waste. They say that the new governmental service has improved the state system of environmental protection in Russia.

Climate change is on us. Ten years ago we only spoke about it, now it’s happening before our eyes. Global warming is bringing unpredictable changes. The Arctic sea ice is disappearing; glaciers are melting faster every year. Due to heavy rains some rivers overflow, while others dry out. Disasters such as tornadoes and floods are spreading. Strong hurricanes are becoming more common and more destructive.

People burn plenty of coal, oil and natural gas. As a result of this billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) are released into the atmosphere every year. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that traps the sun’s radiation within the atmosphere, so the concentration of CO2 increases. As a result of this, temperatures in different parts of the planet rise.

Some cars are designed to work using electric power, without gasoline. It means that they don’t pollute the atmosphere, cost less and reduce the need for oil. Such cars are reliable and have interesting designs. However, they have a few bad points. Many have a maximum speed limit of about 50 miles per hour. Most cities are not ready for the appearance of such cars on their roads.

Environmental organisations have been discussing ways of saving the rain forests for many years. However, we are still facing huge losses in the Amazon. People think that rainforests have already had enough attention. They have been discussed in the press for years. Unfortunately, the rainforest is still in danger and can be destroyed completely.

Environmental problems are serious and we have to deal with them immediately. There may not be easy solutions, but we simply can’t continue living as if everything was fine. These problems aren’t going to disappear by themselves. If we want to keep this planet a healthy place for our grandchildren, it’s time to do everything we can to stop the catastrophe.

The Great Plague* of London

The Black Death arrived in Europe by sea in October 1347 when 12 trading ships came to an Italian port after a long voyage across the Black Sea. A crowd of people gathered on the docks to greet the ships. Soon the smiles changed into a horrifying surprise. Most of the sailors aboard the ships were dead, and those who were still alive were fatally ill. They had a high temperature, couldn’t eat and suffered from pain. The sailors were covered in black swellings which gave their illness its name: the Black Death. The Italian authorities made the ‘death ships’ and their sailors leave the port, but it was too late. Over the next five years, the mysterious Black Death (or the plague) would kill almost one-third of the European population.

The Black Death first appeared in Britain in 1348. Since that time the British islands were never totally free of plague.

In the year 1665 the Black Death came to the city of London, even though King Charles II had tried to prevent the epidemic of plague and had forbidden any trade with Holland, where there was a great plague epidemic. Despite the safety measures, in the early spring of 1665 thousands of people died in the poor parts of London. At first the government didn’t pay much attention to this fact. But as the spring turned into a hot summer, the number of deaths rose and panic set in.

The rich aristocracy and royal family left the capital for their houses in the country. They were followed by the merchants, and the lawyers. By June the roads were full with people who wanted to escape London. The Lord Mayor ordered to close the city gates to anyone who did not have a certificate of health. By mid July over 1,000 deaths per week were reported in the city. It was said that dogs and cats spread the disease. By the Lord Mayor’s order, more than 40,000 dogs and 200,000 cats were killed in London. The real effect of this was that the population of the rats, who were the plague carriers, increased. The Black Death began to spread more rapidly.

Anyone who was in constant contact with plague victims, such as doctors, nurses and inspectors, had to carry coloured sticks outdoors so that they could be easily seen and avoided. When one person in a house caught the plague, the house was closed until 40 days after the victim had either recovered or died (usually the latter). The members of the family were not allowed to leave the house either. Special guards were put at the door to see that no one got out.

Throughout the summer the death rate grew till it reached 6,000 people per week in August. From there the disease very slowly went down until the winter. However, King Charles II decided that it was safe to return to the capital only in February of 1666. How many died? It is hard to say. It was said that 100,000 people had died in and around London, though the figure may have been much higher. The Black Death was the worst and the last of the epidemics in Great Britain.

My home town is A. It’s a little town in the central part of Russia. Historians say that it was founded more than 500 years ago. It was a little settlement but now about 400,000 people live here.

The town is famous for its electrical power station that supplies the whole region. There is also an agricultural factory that produces different milk products and lots of other businesses. The architecture of the centre of the town is not interesting, in my opinion — you can see the same style in most towns and cities. However there are several streets where you can still see old wooden and stone houses — people built such houses here almost a century ago but they look very attractive to me.

I love my town because it’s my home — my family and friends live here. In the summer we spend lots of time outdoors — swim in the river, go to the parks, cycle and explore the surroundings. In winter there are lots of places to go too — there is a skating rink, cinemas and computer clubs. My favourite place is the central park — there are huge, old trees there. We often go there to skateboard, roller-skate and cycle.

I think that my town is a nice place to live in and it’s getting better every year.

People say that youth is probably the best time of your life. As any precious thing it has 2 sides: on the one hand youth is connected with romance, discoveries, emotions, love and so on, on the other hand it can be a difficult time of important decisions that can influence on the future.

A lot of my friends understand that getting a good education is necessary for successful future. Planning the future teenagers think about a possibility of finding a job after finishing their education, but the most difficult thing is to choose the job and the field to their liking. It can lead to misunderstanding with their parents and friends. The typical problem is called “nobody understands me”. Sometimes the parents treat their children as if they are little kids, do not give them enough freedom and pocket money.

Friends are also very important for young people. Some friends stay with us forever, some grow apart, but we should have something in common, share some interests and views.

All in all we need to try to solve all the problems through discussions. One can be young only once,so it is better to enjoy youth while it lasts.

You are going to give a talk about reading books. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:

— what kind of books modern teenagers enjoy reading;

— whether libraries are necessary nowadays or not, and why;

— what book you have read recently, and what it was about;

A book has a wonderful power to influence our minds and lives. I believe that modern teenagers read a lot, but I cannot judge about the genre, as tastes differ. I have been reading since I was 5 years old. I remember that my grandma took me to the library, and we chose my first book together. I think that nowadays libraries still play an important role, not only as sources of collections of books but also as cultural centres. For example, I have recently finished » Harry Potter» by a popular British writer J. K. Rowling. I have read it in Russian before, this time I tried my best to read it in English. It is a fantastic adventure story about a young wizard, who survived in a battle when he was a baby. This fact made him special, and he had various issues during his studies at Hogwarts. This is a wonderful captivating universe, that includes 7 books, and we can also watch 8 films. I know that I will definitely read and watch it once again. We have recently had a meeting at the local library, where we were discussing this masterpiece for 2 hours. Every time I read or talk about various books I enjoy every moment. Every book is a source of knowledge and a never-failing friend.

You are going to give a talk about foreign languages. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

• why you have chosen to do the English exam this year;

I would like to start with the idea that it’s good for a person to know at least one foreign language. It could help him to find a higher wage job. Also it can be useful if you want to read foreign literature. Or maybe you would like to watch foreign shows and movies. A lot of people learn foreign languages because they realize that it will help them in future. Moreover, today every person has a chance to learn a foreign language. I think it’s great. In the past it was only a privilege for the rich people. I have chosen to do English exam this year because I believe that this language is widespread around the world. I learned a lot of grammatical rules and practiced speaking to prepare for my English exam. In summary, I can say that learning languages is a very important skill in the modern world. It can be useful both in professional and entertaining spheres.

— what good and bad habits people have;

— what a healthy way of life is;

— what people should do to keep fit;

Nowadays people are more health-conscious than they used to be. Probably it is connected with the power of mass media or with the deep understanding that good health is even more important than wealth.

A healthy way of life is a philosophical issue. Some people believe that to be healthy you should only avoid different bad habits, like smoking or drinking alcohol. I want to add some more habits, that can affect our health. Such habits like eating junk food, overeating, skipping meals can cause various diseases. That is why I believe that healthy diet is the basis of healthy lifestyle.

The only way to stay healthy and to keep fit is going in for sports and enjoy it. One can become a stronger, healthier and happier person.

Some more important aspects are the amount of time people sleep and spend time in the open air. People say it is useful to take a stroll before going to bed, air the room and then sleep no less than 8 hours.If we want to do well we should follow such recommendations.

I personally believe that discipline and regularity in life can help to promote our health. I even have a special habits’ tracker that helps me and encourages building new healthy habits. To sum it up, I think that proper sleep, regular exercises and healthy diet are really the best way to live.

Give a talk about films.

You have to talk for 1.5−2 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then she / he will ask you some questions.

Nowadays there are lots of opportunities for people to see any film they like — there are lots of TV channels and cinemas or you can buy a disk and watch a film at home or watch it online. In spite of all these opportunities I don’t watch films very often. It’s because I don’t have lots of free time and because I don’t find most contemporary films very interesting — I like the Internet more.

However, I saw an interesting film several days ago. It was an old film and I don’t remember its name. It was about a spaceship that landed on a far-away planet. The crew of the spaceship started to explore the planet and found very intelligent creatures there. They looked very different from us and the captain wanted to study them. Several aliens were killed. Fortunately, the pilot of the spaceship managed to explain to the captain that the people should leave the planet and not to do any more harm to the aliens. The astronauts decided not to inform Earth about the civilization they had found.

You can see that the plot of the film is not original at all. I was surprised that the film didn’t have any expensive special effects, but I enjoyed it because the actors played their roles very well and there were lots of good jokes and humour in the film. The music was also very good. In my opinion, the most essential things for a film are a good story and talented actors.

I think that film producers today often forget about these things and pay too much attention to special effects. That’s why lots of films are very much alike and are not really interesting.

1. Last time my friend and I went to the cinema was two weeks ago. The film was not very good but we had a good time anyway.

2. I like watching the Discovery Channel and different educational programmes. I’m interested in programmes which tell us about different countries, cultures, the mysteries of the past and the secrets of the universe.
