Long ago, in a city called Cordoba, there lived a very beautiful woman. She had lived there as long as anyone could remember. Nobody knew who she was or where she had come from. Even the oldest people in the town could remember her from when they were children. She was called the Wise Woman of Cordoba and it was said that she was in contact with the devil. In many ways, however, the Wise Woman seemed a good person. She always helped those in difficulty. When young girls were lonely and wanted a husband, they went to the Wise Woman. When young ladies were poor and wanted fine dresses to wear at court, they went to her. When miners were sad because there was no silver in their mines, they, too, went to the Wise Woman. And with her magic powers she realized their wishes. She was so famous that even today, when someone in Mexico asks an impossible favour the answer will be: “I`m not the Wise Woman of Cordoba”.
