Show Me What You Got Review: Down-On-Their-Luck Romantics Form a Ménage à Trois

We start at the end as three young lovers jump around in their underwear on a bed in Italy. The voice we hear is of a French woman (Anne-Laure Jardry)—our assumption being that it’s the woman on-screen remembering what was. And why shouldn’t it? We’ve yet to meet Christine (Cristina Rambaldi) or the two men by her side (Mattia Minasi’s Marcello and Neyssan Falahi’s Nassim). All we know is that this scene depicts their final moment of unbridled excitement before the complexity of the world they dreamed to conquer together returns them to the uncertainty that ultimately set them onto their collision course in the first place. We subsequently rewind to watch Marcello and Nassim finally cross Christine’s path. She’s American. The narrator is presumedly someone else.

This reality is a bit disorienting because the narration feels as though it comes from

I wish I could care about these people. I think any film that can acknowledge the possibility of a healthy romance consisting of more than two people is going to be inherently interesting. Though not exactly common, it is something that happens, and there’s a lot to explore there. But yeah, I struggled to connect with these characters, one of whom is the son of an Italian actor whose biggest hangup is that he has to attend meetings in Hollywood for his dad. Oh no!

I like that the fact that these three are together isn’t at all the issue in this movie. But it doesn’t really fill in that space for conflict with anything else. These people are gorgeous,…

The weakest element of this film by far is the dialogue, which for the first half hour is straight up cringeworthy, but it gets better as it nears the end.

The photography style is beautiful and the characters are well developed. I love when films manage to include characters’ cultural backgrounds and identities, it really helps round them out and give more context to who they are.

I think there’s a couple unnecessary flashy “plot twists” towards the end but otherwise I enjoyed watching this and the acting is great, especially from Neyssam Fallahi.

I’m sure everyone and their dog has written about the fact that this is a movie about three people who love each other without judgement. That’s definitely true, and there aren’t a lot of examples of that. I could also go on about how I think the film makes a number of creative decisions that I don’t necessarily agree with, or how it gets tropes and audiovisual elements from a certain genre of film (*cough*frenchnewwave*cough*) and reapplies it for this new story, or how the characters don’t really have a lot to do except mope around or gallivant around the world until a major conflict in the third act. Or how the ending feels melodramatic and out of left field.…

Not good, but also kinda like the French New Wave version of Cats. Some moments of uncanny sexual tension mixed with a genuine (albeit, failed) attempt at emotional chemistry. These characters relationship to money and work and the future was too blurry and vague that it was hard to keep track of what the tension was. Would have liked more if it had taken place over a weekend and examined the infatuation more than whatever the last third of this movie is.

This is just shy of being really good, I think a few edits to the script could have worked miracles here. Besides that, the film is gorgeous, the cinematography is everything, and I appreciate how it was used repeatedly to show the dynamic between the couple. Speaking of their dynamic, it was fantastic. I liked how there was no jealousy between any of the three, and that effort was made to show they missed their third even when only two of them are together. That felt refreshing.

Perhaps the issue that brought this entire thing down for me, was how the ending was written. I previously mentioned that the poly/throuple stuff felt refreshing. The ending was the complete opposite. More…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Is there a reason queer stories (almost) always have to end in tragedy?
To what end, exactly? To generate feeling? Meaning? Shock?
No, it’s arrant laziness.

Queerness is already a resoundingly tragic experience. Give us queer joy for once in a goddamn while.
If a director/writer needs the crutch of death as a plot twist to elicit an emotional response from the audience, then they are 1. Taking the easy way out, and 2. Lack imagination.

Other than that, the film is shot nicely, and the actors do a fine job with the oftentimes shoddy script. (When the narrator does a better job with exposition than the characters do talking with one another, then that’s. yeah, that’s not good)

Show Me What You Got is an interesting film to me, it’s a film that could have utilized silence more in order to make the narrative a bit more mature.

the cinematography is clear and it allows for the personal dynamics to shine despite the horror dialogue.

Svetlana Cvetko immerses us in this world of existential uncertainty and other stuff, its annoying sometimes but also moves like a poem sometimes.

Beautiful to look at and, if at times it plays out like a music video or commercial, in the end one truly cares about these lame characters and is ultimately moved by the ending. Honestly, I was expecting a lot less.

Cvetko isn’t therefore interested in mining what it means for these three to get together. That they join is inevitable. It’s what this relationship gives them that matters.

“Show Me What You Got” is a fine well acted threesome love story reminiscent of Jules & Jim & Going Places. It starts off promising then our characters arrive in Italy and I started losing interest with there self-discoveries.
There is a French narration throughout which I did not feel was needed. Was not sure who was telling this tale.
I do respect director Svetlana Cvetko with what she did with what seems like a very limited budget.
