The Scouring Charm (Scourgify) was a cleaning charm used for washing things. [1] It could also be used to clean out smaller infestations of bundimun. [2] This spell was listed in the third chapter of Book of Spells by Miranda Goshawk. [1] Many wizarding families used this spell, both for cleaning and punishing people who swore, as the spell caused human mouths to be filled with soap. [1]

James Potter used this charm to bully Severus Snape on the Hogwarts grounds, causing soap to fill his mouth. [3]

Hermione Granger taught Neville Longbottom the Scouring Charm to clean frog guts out from under his fingernails, in their fourth year. [6]

The Scouring Charm was used by Nymphadora Tonks when attempting to clean Hedwig’s cage during their liberation of Harry Potter from 4 Privet Drive in 1995. [7] It was later used by Ginevra Weasley on 1 September that year on the Hogwarts Express to clear Stinksap that had squirted from Neville’s Mimbulus mimbletonia. [8]

When first selecting a class you will have to option to pick a 1 hour, 3 hour, or 8 hour duration.В

You will then use energy by tapping on various activities within the class to fill up a progress bar that is separated into breakpoints that reward a star.В

Each class requires only 1 star to complete, but will have additional bonus stars based on duration: 2 total stars (1 bonus) for a 1 hour class, 3 total stars for a 3 hour class, and 5 total stars for an 8 hour class.

Upon spending enough energy to obtain a star you will first be given an option to choose a reward of 5-40 points towards one of the three attributes, 25-1000 gold, or occasionally 1-9 gems or energy.В Based on prices in the shop, each attribute point is worth around 8 gold.В The reward choice priority should be as follows:

With the Magizoology update up to 10 pet food can be rewarded.

Energy and Gem rewards are fairly subjective, I will not select either unless the attribute and gold rewards are extremely low.В Energy is almost never worth taking unless you are desperate to finish an activity quickly.

After this choice you will be given one of three minigames:

Stop an expanding circle within the designated area.

Answer a question from a teacher or fellow student.В Check out our specific class guides for answers to each question.

Trace a shape with your finger.В

Successfully completing the minigame will reward 10 attribute points specific to the class being attended (ex. charms will always reward 10 empathy).

Finally after the time expires or all stars are filled you will receive a reward of attribute points for each star obtained:

The duration of the class also effects the amount of energy required per star.В This may not be 100% accurate, but these are the values we’ve seen for each class duration:

The amount of energy required for each star is based on the activites you complete in the class.В The longer the activity the more progress you will get.В For example a single 5 energy activity will reward more overall class progress than spending 5 energy on multiple shorter activities.

If you’re looking to complete an event as quickly as possible spamming 1 hour classes will be the quickest way to receive stars.В However the 8 hour class is the most efficient in gaining power (attribute points) for your character.

Scourgify is easy, so why is the Hog’s Head so dirty?

As is mentioned repeatedly in chapter 16 of Order of the Phoenix the Hog’s Head pub is filthy. How can this be? From what I remember of the earlier books, Scourgify is so easy to cast that it’s taught to pre-teens. In fact, given that Hermione knows how to cast it, why would Professor Flitwick recommend that she brings her own glass?

It’s (apparently) not all that easy to cast, has a limited effective area, and doesn’t seem to work especially well against heavy staining and grime.

‘Ah, well,’ said Tonks, slamming the trunk’s lid shut, ‘at least it’s all in. That could do with a bit of cleaning, too.’ She pointed her wand at Hedwig’s cage. ‘Scourgify.’ A few feathers and droppings vanished. ‘Well, that’s a bit better – I’ve never quite got the hang of these householdy sort of spells. Right – got everything? Cauldron? Broom? Wow! – A Firebolt?’

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The fact that they’re advised to bring their own glasses to the pub would suggest that the owner isn’t big on cleaning spells either, given that he’s seen to be wiping out glasses with a rag. On top of that you can hardly use scourgify once you’ve already received your drinks in a dirty glass.

It also occurs that the lack of cleanliness may be the bar’s theme. Note the dirty windows and poor lighting. All of these seem to be designed to attract a certain clientele (denizens, really) more comfortable being in an environment where privacy is closely guarded.
