The book tells about a young man called Harry Potter. He is an orphan. He lives in a family of his Aunt. First he did not knew he was a magician. He lived an ordinary life. People who do not practice magic are called Muggles. It is prohibited to use any kind of magic in front of the Muggles. All of a sudden Harry finds out that he is a wizard. He goes to a big school of magic called Hogwarts. Harry Potter meets new friends, studies and faces the most evil magician Lord Voldemort.

The book about Harry Potter teaches how to cope with difficulties. The book explains how important family and friends are. Harry Potter is the book that I want to read over and over again. I have already read this book a few times. I liked the books more than the movies. I will definitely read Harry Potter again.

The Hobbit

I am interested in reading. Especially I like phantasy. I have read Tolkien’s fairy tale «The Hobbit». I really like this masterpiece. There are many strange creatures in this story: hobbits, trolls, dwarves and elves.

The main character of the book is the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. He is about fifty years old. This is a short cheerful man with shaggy legs. He does not wear shoes. In Bilbo’s opinion, everything should be predictable. If someone wanted to borrow money he always knew how to disappear quickly and silently.

Bilbo lived an ordinary life until he met the wizard Gandalf. The hobbit had to leave his cozy home and go with the dwarves in search of treasures stolen by the dragon. He is taking risks along his journey. Eventually bilbo becomes a true hero.

The book raises questions of the struggle between good and evil. We need to be courageous to achieve certain goals. The Hobbit is not only a fascinating story but also an instructive book. It teaches us courage, attentiveness and finding ways to overcome difficulties.

The Little Prince

My favourite book is the Little Prince written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This is a sad tale about adults and children. This is a wise and humane tale, which is most likely addressed to adults. The writer thinks about good and evil, beauty and indifference, friendship and love, about a person’s loyalty and responsibility for their actions.

Reading a fairy tale, sometimes you smile, sometimes you feel sad, but it definitely gives food for thought. This tale is wise and kind. The little prince leaves his home planet, where his main occupation was to admire the sunset and take care of a capricious rose. There he lived according to the rule: «I got up in the morning, washed, put myself in order and immediately put my planet in order.» Maybe we, the inhabitants of the planet Earth, need to remember this rule? The boy goes on a long journey to other planets to find a friend. This is how he gets to Earth — to our planet, the only one, beloved, sometimes unkind. Here the little prince meets the pilot, who told us this story.

Exupery also reminds us of responsibility for our actions. We cannot put up with evil. The tale convinces us that friendship is a great and strong feeling that each of us needs.

What Are Your Favorite Books and Authors?

In his obituary of J.D. Salinger, Charles McGrath writes, “Reading ‘Catcher’ used to be an essential rite of passage, almost as important as getting your learner’s permit.” What are the books and authors that have been “essential” for you, whether you read them as a child or recently?

The relationship between books and readers has been highlighted in several different Times contexts lately. Reader reaction to Salinger’s death is here, but another reader wrote in to mourn Erich Segal’s recent death and talk about her and her students’ relationship with “Love Story.” And last Sunday the Week in Review published an essay about the intimate relationship between “serious” readers and the books they love:

[…]There is a different class of reader, though. They feel that their relationship with a book, its characters and the author is too intimate to share. “The pursuit of reading,” Virginia Woolf wrote, “is carried on by private people.”

Ms. Stead remembers having had especially intense feelings about books when she was young. “For me, as a kid, a book was a very private world,” she said. “I didn’t like talking about books with other people very much because it almost felt like I didn’t want other people to be in that world with me.”

Particularly with the books we adore most, a certain reader wants to preserve the experience for reflection, or even claim the book as hers and hers alone.

I think there are a lot of books that people should read. Mostly old classics, because the literary standards of today are falling down. “Watership Down” by Richard Adams was a wonderful book about the struggle between good and evil. “Animal Farm” by George Orwell was a great book that helped me understand about communism. The Bronte sisters wrote wonderful romance novels full of provoking thoughts for their time period. (Nothing like the stupid stuff girls read today) “The Catcher in the Rye” was also fabulous.
There are a few recent books out there that were very good. Margaret Peterson Haddix continues to write good futuristic books. Brian Jacques writes in a style similar to Richard Adams. I read constantly; it’s one of my favorite things to do. I really hope the Catcher in the Rye will stay around for years.

my favorite books are the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, I’m a super heroes nerd, my dad ordered me the first 4 books online, he told me the name I’m thinking oh great another boring series. so i get them he forces me to read them right away, i later find out being dislexic and having ADHD makes you a demigod i have these both so i was so happy thinking i could be a superhero then as a joke my faher says he’s posidon lol i thoght that was cool =)!

My favorite books depend on how old I was when I read them. As a really young child, I enjoyed just about any horse/pony-related series. Thereafter, Roald Dahl, Sharon Creech, and Roland Smith were (and still are) great to read. Gary Paulsen was a bit harder to like, but I liked having his books read to me in grade school and I enjoy his book The Island. Lois Lowry’s The Giver has made my favorite list, and some of her other books have sparked interest, but some others I shrug at. Cornelia Funke was pretty good; reading over Inkheart again, I find myself enjoying the descriptions far more now than when I was younger (and wanted more action than description).

Today I find myself reading more nonfiction, especially online news content. But at the moment, I am reading The Piano Tuner, by Daniel Mason. It’s beautifully written, in a very lyrical, poetic, nuanced way that really reflects on the main character’s career as a piano tuner.

When i was younger my mother would read me “Bedtime for Francis”. 15 years later, the book is still sitting on my bookshelf. The pages are torn, illuminated with a yellow tint, while the cover dangles only by a thread. This book is about a young badger whose afraid of the dark. Using her imagination, a coat becomes a man prowling in the dark, a rap at the window is the scratch of a strangers fingernails, and the hole in the ceiling keeps growing. All these years later, I still carry the story of Francis close to my heart.

Well there are certainly many books that I adore, and many are from my childhood, such as Where the Wild Things Are, and Good Night Moon. From my own personal reading, I have come to really enjoy the authors Meg Cabot and Sara Dessen. In school, there are many book that I have enjoyed, particularly the classics that we read in English. I think that many people should read classics, and not only “superficial” and “shallow” typical teen books that are designed to draw teenagers in. I think people should read Catcher in the Rye or Inherit the Wind (which is actually a play), and other classics such as Watership Down, Lord of the Flies, and even some Shakespeare (I’ve only read Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth). My mother encourages me to read old classics that she has handed down to me, such as The Little Princess, Anne of Green Gables, and The Secret Garden.

I have many favorite books like the House Of Night series by the Casts, or the classic Dracula by Bram Stroker. But my favorite book of all time that i can connect with is Shooter by Walter Dean Meyers is my favorite. Books that can get to you emotionally, or something you can connect with, truly become a part of you. So i believe that this book as well as some others are favorites of mine.

I like to read fantasy like the Harry Potter, and Eragon series. Catcher in the Rye was a interesting book and well written. Another book which was fascinating was Jane Eyre, it used gothic themes and a relationship between a rich man and poor governess. I really don’t like the Twilight series it is not well written and only appeals to girls because they want good looking vampire romance.

Although the Artemis Fowl series isn’t very long it has a great story that anyone will like while also mixing in cool technology. I think all teenagers should read some books to a certain degree because reading is a good thing, and is fun.

To be truthful, I would’ve never read Catcher in the Rye if it was not an assigned book to read in English. Holden’s attitude and phony identities bugged me. A lot. But as I read on about the crummy life Holden’s having and all that, I start to realize why it’s a good book. We can relate to Holden’s struggle to life. Despite all his whining and hypocritical statements, Holden is just what high school students are experiencing…the stress and struggles of school and trying to maintain who you are and face the pressure from peers.

I love to read and I have many favorite books. I love to read fiction. Mysteries and science fiction are my favorite. I’m currently reading Black Ops, a Presidential novel, and I have to say, it might be difficult to read if you aren’t interested in this sort of stuff. It has a lot of government terms and it can get confusing.

To all freshmen going into high school, Sleeping freshmen never lie… by David Lubar is an amazing novel to read. It is entertaining and it kind of exaggerates what happens in high school, but if you are nervous about going to high school and all, read this. I’m sure it won’t be as bad as this kid’s.

And my favorite series is Warriors by Erin Hunter. Some people find it childish and completely ridiculous, how cats can form clans and survive in the wild like tigers and lions. But I really like it because it takes you into their world. You can picture whatever is happening. It’s kind of like a stress reliever. It takes you away from the stress and difficulties of the real world for a while and shows you the world of cats who do not live with “Twolegs”. Rather they live together in “clans” that have their own hierarchy and it is really a great series to read. There are 4 series within a series with 6 books in each. If you love cats, this is a great novel to read. To dog lovers (which includes me), you see cats in a totally new perspective.

As an only child, you learn to find solitary activities, and for me that meant reading. When I was young, I spent hours reading, the works of Maurice Sendak, Roald Dahl, or J.K. Rowling. While my taste has certainly matured over the years, my love of reading has remained. My favorite author currently is Kurt Vonnegut, who wrote the classics Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat’s Cradle, and my personal favorite, Mother Night. Other novels I have adored are Brighton Rock by Graham Greene, Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson.
In regards to JD Salinger’s recent death, I would actually say that Franny and Zooey was much better than Catcher in the Rye. Either way, he was an incredible author whose novel’s will definitely be remembered for years to come.

My opinions concerning books can be narrowed down to three words: Orson Scott Card. Ender’s Game, Ender’s Shadow, and both series’ following books are amazing. Thought provoking, but also a genuinely interesting book. Much better than the silly books were forced to read in school.

Have you ever had to read Into the Wild? The book can be summed up in a few words: young kid defies society and dies. It’s a touching story, however, I don’t see why we would have to read it for school… It’s best suited for a optional Journalism class or something along those lines because from a research standpoint the book is a golden beacon of excellence.

I bashfully admit that i do adore Harry Potter. While growing up I would mark the expected release date and always be one of the first to buy the new copies. I do think literature today has changed from early 20th cenury writing. There is less moral and societal messages and more passages trying to intrigue young readers.

One of my all time favorite books was called Song of Solomon, which I read in junior year English. It goes into depth with some of the historical events that took place in the civil war, but ties in several other stories about family, love, and growing up.
Though I have to agree with those who commented above, when it comes to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The Harry Potter books were practically my life from ages nine to thirteen, and I will always love them.

Salinger is no doubt the quintessential “gateway” author, as McGrath wrote. The authenticity of “Catcher in the Rye” will probably never be surpassed for me, and “Nine Stories” are some of the most spot-on portraits I’ve ever read. Many teens are gravitating away from Holden’s “whining” and Salinger’s dated dialogue, though, as the New York Times reported last week. For me, Holden is so much more than the sum of his “whining” (if it can even be called that), and the dated dialogue gives the story a necessary and endearing specificity.

Roald Dahl, Charles Dickens, and Dr. Seuss were also important for me. Their exagerrated, fantastical versions of social reality were zany and fun for a child to read. I was into Harry Potter for a while, but I don’t consider it “essential” to my development as a person.

Finally, as I grew up, I began to read Orwell’s “Animal Farm” and “1984”, as well as Edith Wharton’s “Ethan Frome”. These opened my mind to new parts of the literary canon – I had never seen an author manipulate a narrative so effectively, and I’ve never turned back.

My favorite books are definitely by Jodi Picoult! I love The Pact and Nineteen Minutes by her. Her novels are so well done, and very vividly written making me feel like I am there with the characters.

I rarely read books, but there are a few that catch my attention. My favorite authors include Lemony Snicket, Anthony Horowitz, Louis Sachar. Some of my favorite books are Holes, The Series of Unfortunate Events, Snakehead, and Eragon. Sadly, I don’t really enjoy reading books, but I will if I have to.

Oh- and I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned Lord of the Flies yet. I read it when I was fairly young, and I loved making the intricate connections between the endless symbols and metaphors.

Im gona be lame and go out and say it! I love twilight haha the movies stink but the books are amazing…atleast, they were the last time i read them. i couldn’t put it down. I like any kind of fantasy book, and also non fictional stories.

There have been a few that have stuck out as my favorite through the years. Shakespeare doesn’t peak my interest, and Fantasy novels are not my favorite either. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald comes to mind as a great book. It recounts the historical significance of the 1920’s, and how that era affected the lives of the characters in the novel. I liked it because of the unique characters, and enjoyed observing how their differences led to major conflicts in the novel.

The Midnight Kitchen takes the cake for my favorite book from childhood. It had no words, only bizarre drawings of a boy in the nude swimming in a giant milk jug. I “read” the story countless times, making it a new book with every reading.
Recently, Truman Capote has been the only one who has been able to measure up. Children on Their Birthdays made me laugh, which is all that is really needed to make it into my top ranking stories.

Over the years, I have discovered that the books that I loved, adored, and ripped the covers of are fantasy ones. My favorites have been Harry Potter —all the way. the Eragon series by Christopher Poalini, The Ruby Throne Trilogy, and many others. As a child, the best minutes of the day was when my dad would read to me the story of the Twelve Dancing Princesses. Night after night, I would make him read it to me and by the end of the year, the book was weathered and the spine was beyond repair. Although I have always been attracted to fantasy stories, lately I have been into Sarah Dessen books and am starting to read Jodi Picoult. So far, I loved My Sister Keeper and am determined to read her others. Recently I have also been really interested in Nocholas Sparks’ novels.

I read at least a book a week, so its hard to nail down my favorite ever. But the book that started it all out for me, the book that made me realize the possibilities of reading was something my mother brought me from the library when I was stuck in bed with the German measles (in the 3rd or 4th grade) and bored to tears. It was “The House of Sixty Fathers” and told the tale of a Korean child, separated from his mother in the war. Later, I bought it for my own son, who was underwhelmed, but I will never forget its impact, and how it opened the door for a lifetime of reading for pleasure.

When I was little my dad used to read to us during breakfast. Lucy Johnston Sypher’s North Dakota pioneer stories like “The Edge of Nowhere,” Ruth Sawyer’s “Roller Skates,” and Elizabeth Enright’s “The Four-Story Mistake” series (which I adore and recommend to everyone!), just to name a few.

Cue fourth grade and the discovery of Harry Potter. Those books opened me to reading in a way that others hadn’t up till that point: the idea that reading could be fun, that authors sprinkled clues throughout books, plus the funny names, magic, and story hooked me.

And literature? If I didn’t love it, I wouldn’t be an English major. Jane Austen is queen. Shakespeare is equally haunting and hilarious. I want to see “Equus” staged. I need to reread “The Great Gatsby.” Orwell blows my mind. “Wuthering Heights” is heart-breakingly tragic, and “Villette” (which I’m reading now) has so many layers I know that the next time I read it I’ll see so many more things. I want to take a class on Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” I know I’ll take a class on Chaucer. Maria Edgeworth is a jewel who is often overlooked. You can’t exist and not like some aspect of Charles Dickens or Mark Twain. “The Forsyte Saga” is breathtaking. “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” is unbearably poignant.

Curiously, something I really didn’t like reading, something I read because I wanted to, and everyone else seemed to love it so much, was “Catcher in the Rye.” Didn’t like it, except the part about the ducks. Maybe a reread is in order?

Long live the book!

I teach at the College of Staten Island, a four-year public school in NYC. I would say about that only 1/10 have ever read a novel for fun. 1/50 read the newspaper. It’s over. How can JDS compete with Jersey Shore?

During my childhood, most of the books by Enid Blyton, i loved the smartest rabbit. And Roald Dahl, Charles Dickens.
When i was a teenager, i discover the russian litterary and Dostoievski was my master with “The Idiot” and “Crime and Punishement”. And Soljenitsyne, Evguenia Guinsburg, and Kafka. Later, i read the american litterary and my first was Hubert Selby Jr., “The Demon”. And my favourite is “The Confederancy of Dunces” by Jonh Kennedy Toole, an amazing book about an amazing character, a “jusqu’auboutiste” guy who lived in NA.
I don’t know why i didn’t love “Catcher inThe Rye” but i will read it over.

I have read Catcher in the rye by Salinger just because my teacher had us oblidged to read a couple of books this winter. I liked it, but it doesn’t seem suitable for kids my age(i’m 16). I would have read it when I was younger.

When I was little, I loved the Harry Potter Series, Eragon Series, that kind of books that I think any teenager of my generation has grown up with.
But, right now I like to read more mature books and my favorites are: Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, all books by Jane Austen, Tess D’urbervilles, War and Peace, so basically classics. My teachers tell me that I’m more mature than the other class-mates. I don’t know what to think myself, but this is what I like.

My favourite book – is «Harry Potter» by Joanne Roaling. It tells about a boy who lives with his aunt, uncle and cousin. But Harry feels lonely and unhappy there.

Once Harry receives an invitation letter from a magical school named Hogwarts. At school he gets new friends – Ron and Hermione. They start to learn magical spells and poisons and get a lot of fun and adventures.

Also Harry starts playing Quidditch. It’s a sort of football that is played on broomsticks.

At the end of the book Harry meets Voldemort – a person who killed his parents many years ago. Fortunately the boy manages to win an evil wizard with the help of his friends. All ends very well.

I like the books of Harry Potter. They teach us to be kind, sincere and strong.

It’s impossible to be an educated person without good books. Most of the books are to be read just once, others can be read plenty of times. And each time you find something new and useful as you turn the same pages of your favourite books. I am fond of books about adventures and great people, detective stories and science fiction. I enjoy reading them when I have spare time.

But my favorite book of all times is a novel “Three comrades” written by a German writer Erich Maria Remarque. This book was recommended to me by my elder sister and I’m grateful to her for that advice. It was really worth reading.

“Three comrades” is a book about love and friendship of three common people (Robert, Otto and Gottfried) who lived in Germany between the two World wars. The main characters are real friends who struggle together with poverty and violence and they manage to preserve their dignity and humanity. The story of beautiful and tragic love between Robert and Pat is heart-breaking because the girl dies of tuberculosis.

I find the book very powerful and deeply moving. It teaches people to find the inner strength to live in a tough world. It often helps me when I find myself in a difficult situation and I need an answer to some question. It is my great friend and teacher.

Reading has been an effective tool to discover the life for many centuries. Books can be your guide to living, can develop your understanding of the world around and are also one of the most popular leisure time activities of all.

As for me, I discovered the wonderful world of reading when I was 10. I had read several books before but the book I was presented for my tenth birthday changed my attitude to reading and I started doing it for pleasure. I still remember this story in all details and treat it as my favourite one.

The title of this book is “Five go to Smuggler’s Top” and it is written by Enid Blyton, a famous British writer who wrote series of adventure books for children. My favourite book belongs to one of the most well-known series “The famous five” and tells about the adventures of four children and their faithful dog.

The main characters of the book are siblings Julian, Dick and Ann and their cousin George who is actually a girl whose full name is Georgina. She is my favourite character of this book because of her extremely interesting personality and identity. She has a dog called Timmy who plays an important role in this story. The adventures of these children begin as soon as they arrive to live in Mr. Lenoir’s house. There they meet Mr. Lenoir’s son Sooty who quickly becomes their friend. The key point is that Timmy is not allowed to live in this house so the children have to keep him secretly in the tunnels beneath the house. Using these tunnels to walk Timmy they find out the mystery of smugglers and their criminal activity.

I find this book really fascinating. It keeps your attention from the first page and it’s difficult to predict what is going to happen next. It’s especially interesting to understand who is who and find out the criminals in the end. The children get into troubles constantly and you’re worried about them all the time. I recommend reading this book to all teenagers who are keen on such kind of literature. It is going to blow you away.

I like reading books. It is the significant part of my everyday life. I am a real bookworm. I have a big home library. There you can find works of different authors and genres.

I have many favourite books but the most favourite one is the book “The Count of Monte Cristo” written by French author Alexandre Dumas in 1844. It is an adventure novel and one of the most popular works of Alexandre Dumas.

The story is about young man Edmond Dantes who was arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned without trial. Before his arrest he was the first mate of the captain of the ship “Pharaon”. He loved a girl, whose name was Mercedes, and his feeling was mutual. However three men hated Edmond and decided to make him be framed up for treason. They could do that and Edmond was imprisoned. Fortunately, thanks to his fellow prisoner old Faria, Edmond managed to escape and could find the treasure. As rich and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo he was back to France. His aim was to avenge himself on those three men for destroying his life.

When I read this book for the first time, I completely agreed with all actions of Dantes. Then I was only 16 years old. However many years later I read this book one more time. And as an adult I would say that sometimes the revenge of Dantes was too severe. I changed my point of view concerning many problems raised in the book.

Nevertheless, I like the main character and sympathise him. I recommend this book to everyone.

I love the overall ideas of this book and it challenges me to be the very best I can be. The delivery is so funny and relatable that it almost doesn’t feel like a “self-help” book. It’s just my homegirl giving me some dope advice and spilling the type of tea that actually matters.

Why?

This book is beautifully written, with a very captivating plot and well-rounded characters. It’s the type of book that lingers in your heart well after you’ve finished it. Plus, I have a real weakness for period & mystery novels, and this one hit the spot for me.

Why?

The story is about siblings who are separated in their childhood. The context of the book is based on a poor, marginalised situation where partners are not able to keep their child with them even though they want to or they love their child so much. It also shows that as a girl or woman, our parents make many decisions for us. We often don’t have rights in our own homes and are not part of the family.

Additionally, even though in another part of the story there is wealth and education, the woman still pays in own way. In the end, it is a matter of the male perception and attitude towards the status of women in the family. This novel shows how in every society, girls and women are naturally the victims. It also shows that while the issues that women face today may be changing, the status of women in the family remains similar and is common to many of us.

7. Lilach (One Day with Lilach)

I read it for the first time at the age of 14 and since then, read it again every 5-8 years. And every time I discover things I didn’t notice before. As a girl I loved the fact that the child breaks the boundaries of physics and just rises from the ground and flies … oh how I wanted to be able to fly too!

Why?

This is a great little book that has accompanied my professional development for years. The bookstore owner believed that every person at any given moment has a specific book suited to him or her. And the book that suits you in the morning is not necessarily the book that suits you in the evening. I find it amazing and as a librarian, I see it as a professional challenge to find the right book for each person at a specific time.

8. Deeksha (One Day with Deeksha)

My favorite book

Why?

It’s a beautiful book that has touched my heart deeply. The book consists of short poems based on Zebian’s personal experiences and her view of life. When I read the book, it was like someone giving a voice to all those feelings that are hidden somewhere in my heart.

It also makes you reflect on your purpose in life, your relationship with others and with yourself, the way you see this world and many more important topics. It’s a must read book for all women out there; doesn’t take much time to read as you can read one or two short poems even in a break of 5 minutes!

My favourite quote from the book is: “To the heart in you, don’t be afraid to feel. To the sun in you, don’t be afraid to shine. To the love in you, don’t be afraid to heal. To the ocean in you, don’t be afraid to rage. To the silence in you, don’t be afraid to break.”

9. Jasmin (One Day with Jasmin)

Why?

I read this book during a very intense period of self-searching and it affected me greatly. It helped me sort out my thoughts, feelings and understandings about myself and the world and helped me improve my relationships with others around me. This is a book that I strongly recommend to anyone who delves into the philosophy of life and seeks answers to trivial questions about ourselves! The book itself is written using simple language and gives real-life examples, which I loved as well. I do not like heavy, complicated books with a very high-level of language because it makes it difficult for me to uncover the point itself.

10. Panny (One Day with Panny)

My favorite book

Why?

I am an introverted bookworm. So it’s hard to say which single one is my favorite. P erhaps l will choose the one that enlightened me and initiated my inner growth journey a long time ago. I’ve read it several times and still find it soul-touching. It provoked my inner craving for something deep and prepared me for starting a lonely but fulfilling inner growth journey.

11. Orly (One Day with Orly)

Why?

Besides the fact that it deals with time travel which has always fascinated me, I loved the way the book made me think all the time and figure out the complicated plot, and to try and understand all the elements and lots of different paradoxes. Also, while it’s strangely complicated, it’s also a beautiful, exciting and sad love story.
