Why sitting is bad for you
Sitting down for brief periods can help us recover from stress or recuperate from exercise. But nowadays, our lifestyles make us sit much more than we move around. Are our bodies built for such a sedentary existence? Murat Dalkilinç investigates the hidden risks of sitting down.
What would happen if you didn’t sleep?
In the United States, it’s estimated that 30 percent of adults and 66 percent of adolescents are regularly sleep-deprived. This isn’t just a minor inconvenience: staying awake can cause serious bodily harm. Claudia Aguirre shows what happens to your body and brain when you skip sleep.
The benefits of good posture
Has anyone ever told you, “Stand up straight!” or scolded you for slouching at a family dinner? Comments like that might be annoying—but they’re not wrong. Your posture is the foundation for every movement your body makes and can determine how well your body adapts to the stresses on it. Murat Dalkilinç gives the pros of good posture.

It’s 4am, and the big test is in 8 hours. You’ve been studying for days, but you still don’t feel ready. Should you drink another cup of coffee and spend the next few hours cramming? Or should you go to sleep? Shai Marcu defends the latter option, showing how sleep restructures your brain in a way that’s crucial for how our memory works.

Me and my Phone
What’s your relationship with your smartphone? Obsessive, practical, indifferent or fearful? Readers tell us about their relationships with their phones.
Annalisa has had an Iphone for 2 years because exactly two years ago, on April the first, her phone was stolen at Villa Pamphili.
Elvira has a Samsung S7. Noel and Carolina have i-Phone 7s while Giulia has an i-Phone 6s.
Caterina has an old LG Nexus for Google. Sabrina has a two-year-old Samsung.
Read their comments below. But first read Alessandra’s story:
1) What make is your phone? How long have you had it?
My phone is an old model by Apple, iphone4. I think I have had it for about 5 years.
2) Would you like to get a new one? Why?
I’d like to get a new phone since the battery of the actual one runs down quickly. Moreover, its connection speed is slow because of the old hardware.
3) What ringtone do you have?
I have selected a faint ringtone.
4) What do you use your phone for (apart from talking)?
I use my phone to get all information I need from the Internet, to download apps of interest, to listen to music. In short, when I’m outside home or office, I use it as a small computer.
5) Where and when do you normally switch off your phone?
I never switch off my phone if my son is not with me. For example, if I’m in office and he’s at school or to do sport or with his friends. In such occasions, I prefer to be contactable. I turn off my phone when I’m with my family in quiet zones (hospitals, churches, trains, etc). When it is necessary, I put it on vibrate/silent mode. I usually use the silent mode when I’m in the classroom to lecture or in the lab with my students. Those are the most common situations for me.
6) Have you ever lost your phone?
I’ve never lost it. I often forget where I’ve left it!! My students enjoy looking at me while I’m looking for it. In the same way, I always forget my keys somewhere in my lab.
7) Have you ever sent a message to the wrong person?
Fortunately, I’ve never made such a mistake.
8) Have you ever forgotten to turn your phone off (with embarrassing consequences)?
I think only twice. Consequences were not embarrassing since my ringtone is soft and the situations were not particularly ticklish.

Many thanks for this article Lara. Let me see if I can give you some feedback:
> Unfortunately, one day someone stole it from my car.
> I hurried to buy another identical model
> after three years a smartphone is already very old
I hope these help.
Editor!
My phone is a Huawei p30 black. I’m not going to change my phone because i bought it one month ago, before i had an old LG that didn’t allow me to make good videos and surf the internet quickly. I always have my phone in vibrate mode because i hate the ringtone.
In my spare time I use my cell phone to read newspapers and listen to music, while when I work I use it to manage social pages of facebook and instagram. I never turn off my phone, except when I’m in a church, because I always put it on vibrate mode and I don’t like when i’m cut off from the world.
Many thanks Marco! I’ll add corrections soon. Here is one:
> because I bought it a month ago
> I used to have an old LG
I hope these help!

My phone is an iPhone 6, I bought it about four years ago. It has a problem at the motherboard and because of this the battery drains quickly and I have to load it three time a day. Changing the motherboard is very expensive compared to the value of an enough old phone, therefore I continue to use my phone now and when it won’t work anymore I think I will buy an iPhone 7. I use my phone to call, to send messages, to get information in internet, to listen to music. I never switch off it but in silent place as in the church, in the class or during the night, I put it in silent mode. Fortunately I have never lost it. One time my phone rang while I was at the doctor and I immediately hung up.
Many thanks for this article, Giovanni! Here’s one correction:
> There is a problem with the motherboard
I’ll add more corrections later.

Because It is a new model, I don’t need to buy a new phone.
I usually use my phone to read newspapers, to watch funny videos on social media and to listen music.
I don’t know which ringtone has my phone because it is always in silent mode.
I’ve never lost it but sometimes I forget where i left it.
Many thanks Andrea! Just one mistake:

I hope this helps!

My phone brand is a Samsung. I have had it for two years.
I don’t need to buy a new phone because it is still very efficient.
I have chosen a ringtone with a low tone.
I often use my phone to record workshops about my job, to watch videos and when I need to know
what’s going on in the world.
I always turn my phone off when I go to the theater or to the cinema so I’m sure not to disturb anyone.
Normally I put it on silent mode when I teach because I can check if some customers need to communicate.
changes to me.
I have never lost it but once my phone fell on the floor and the screen broke.
I honestly don’t remember well, maybe once to a friend but it didn’t create problems.
Luckily I’ve never forgotten to turn my phone off.
Many thanks for this article Valentina! Just one final correction:
> I honestly don’t remember well, maybe once to a friend but it didn’t create problems.
I think we should insert a reference to the question, thus;
> Have I ever sent a message to the wrong person? I honestly don’t remember well, maybe once to a friend but it didn’t cause any problems.
Many thanks once again!

Me and my Phone
My phone is an old Samsung model but it works very well.I have had it for over five years.
I’d like to get a new phone because the screen is damaged and the software is obsolete.
I’ve put a simple ringtone on my phone.
The phone is currently used more for functions like those of a computer such as reading emails, watching the movies, looking for informations on the internet etc.
I personally think it’s the best way to use the phone.
I always switch my phone off when I work and I don’t take it with me on stage, it could be dangerous!
When I meet people and attend meetings. I put it on silent mode.
I’ve never used the vibrate mode and I don’t understand why people use it, because it produces noise as much as ringtone.
I once lost my phone but luckily I found it where I had left it.Once I sent a message to the wrong person but I am forgiven.
I’ve occasionally forgotten to turn my phone off but always in informal situations.
Thanks very much for your contribution, Fabio!
Just one final correction:
> looking for information[s] on the internet – “information” is almost always an uncountable noun.
I hope that helps!

Hello everyone,
my mobile phone is an Iphone 6s which I bought second hand in 2015. I bought it for more or less four hundred euros on Internet and I saved about three or four hundred euros.
The main things that I usually do with it are: play CLASH ROYALE my favorite game at the moment, take pictures, to go on social network such as Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin and also on WhatsApp.
Sometimes I also use the GPS to go to unknown locations, English dictionary, music player and forecast to know if the next day I can get to work with my scooter or by car.
I have removed every tone from it, because I don’t want to disturb other people when I am in public places such as Trains, the Metro etc. etc..
I hate people who use the ringtone on high volume and talk loudly in public.
I usually switch off my phone only when I am in the Airplane; everywhere else I put it in flight mode.
I have never lost my phone and never sent a message to a wrong person.
Many thanks for this, Giovanni! A nice article. Here is a small correction:
“to go on social networks”
“I have removed all the sounds [from it]”
I hope this helps! – Editor
MY PHONE AND I (Ester)
My phone brand is Apple. The model is a black iPhone 7 plus with a capacity of 128 gigabytes. I have had it for two years. I would like to get a new one, but for now I think I’ll keep my phone because it works really well and has a very quick connection.
I have a default ringtone called “Seta” but I’m searching a new one, because I’d like to change it.
Apart from talking, I use my phone in different ways: to text a friend, to call mobiles and landlines by Skype, to record my pupils when they are playing the guitar, to fill in my online register, to scan documents, to download and listen to music, and to play videogames. I also use an app called “Guitar Tuna” as a metronome and to tune guitars and every morning I check, send and delete e-mail by phone.
I switch off my mobile phone when I go to the theatre or to the cinema, if I am in a quiet zones as hospital, church or when I am inside the plane.
I have never lost my phone. I have often forgotten it several times in different places and fortunately I found it again.
Two months ago, I sent a message by WhatsApp to a friend of mine calling him “my love”, but I thought I had written it to my husband. It was very embarrassing.
A few months ago, I forgot to turn my phone off during a classical music concert at the Auditorium “Parco della musica”. When the phone rang the people looked at me annoyed.
Thanks very much for this piece, Ester! A few small corrections:
“but I’m looking for a new one”
“to call mobiles and landlines via Skype”
“if I am in a quiet zone such as a hospital”
“When the phone rang the people looked at me in annoyance.”
I have an Iphone from one years. It was my birthday present because the old model was broken.
I use my phone to get information from the internet, to post photos on instagram, to listen music, to write email and to find places on google maps. However, I don’t use my phone often and sometimes I forget to watch it.
One years ago, I turned off my phone when I slept but, now, for my job, I usually turn off only message notifications to be reachable anyway with a call.
In general, it’s very difficult to talk about my phone because it’s an object. And I haven’t a particular obsession with it. Luckily.
Thanks very much for this piece, Ilario! A few corrections:
“I have had an Iphone for a year”
“to listen to music”
“to write emails”
“Last year, I turned off my phone when I slept”
“I usually turn off only message notifications so as to be reachable anyway”
“And I have no particular obsession with it.”
Nice article! I hope these corrections help.

I have a iPhone 8 from two years it is running well so I don’t need to buy another one. I never switch off it but I always put it on silent mode. When I was at work I never use it except for important things, however I use it as navigator when I drive and as dictionary when I study.
Sometimes I forget it at work or at home because of the silent mode and in this case I really feel alone.
My phone is a Samsung A7 and I have it since about three months
Certainly not, because my phone is new and I get on well with it
My ringtone is a music about a cartoon i Cavalieri dello Zodiaco, not the theme song, just music without words that is heard inside the cartoon
Generally I don’t like use the phone, I use it for call some friend, for internet and listen to music.
I switch off my phone in situations that require it, like when I go to cinema, to theatre, if I go out with a girl, situations like these
Luckly I have never lost my phone even if one time it was stolen from me, fortunately I saw the thief so I ran after him and I gave it back to him.
No, I think it never happens
It happened a long time ago in cinema and was a terrible and embarrassing moment
Many thanks for your piece about your i-Phone, Luca!
One correction for now:
“My phone is a Samsung A7 and I have had it for about three months”
More again soon!

My phone is an Iphone that I have had it for 2 years because two years ago, just the on April the first, my phone was stolen at Villa Pamphili.
I don’t like any ringtone and so my phone is silent.
I usually use my phone a lot during the day specially for look and for send some messages.
When I am out of my office I use the phone also to read newspaper and to use facebook.
I like to take pictures because Iphone makes them very well and also because after I can modify these pictures.
I turn off my phone during the night and even when I am in the cinema or at the theatr, either because I don’t want noise and because I don’t wanto to contact the word outside.
Many thanks for this, Annalisa! Any corrections? Let me see:
“My phone is an Iphone that I have had [it] for 2 years” – no “it” here
“just the on April the first” => should be “precisely on April the first”
“specially to read and send [some] messages”
“because the Iphone takes them very well”
That’s all for now. I hope these help. Many thanks once again!

My Phone is an iPhone 7 and I’ve had it for two years. In this moment I have already bought a new iPhone, last month, but I’haven’t had time to use it.
I bought a new iPhone, because the battery of iPhone 7 doesn’t work very well and the screen is broken. As ringtone I have chosen “Old phone”, because it’s classic and I love it.
I use my phone to send and receive email, to wake up and for GPS.
Normally I turn it off when I’m writing a review or essay and when I’m reading.
I’ve never lost my phone, maybe because I was born in Naples and I paid a lot of attention to my phone (and my wallet).
Sometimes it happened to send a message to the wrong person, fortunately nothing emabarassing.
I’ve never forgotten to turn off my phone, because I put ever my phone on vibrate o silent mode.
My phone is an old model by LG, a Nexus for Google. I think I have it since 2013.
I would like to get a new one because the battery is runs down quickly, and the ardware and connection are slow and sometime the Apps don’t run. I hope Santa Claus will give me a new one, I wrote the letter…
My ringtone is the Star Wars soundtrack. I use my phone to chat with friends, for Facebook, to make photos and for reading work’s email
I normaly switch off my mobile at cinema, theater, restaurant, when I go running and during the English lessons.
I never lost my phone. I often send message to the wrong person or chat.
Once I forgot to turn off my phone during a presentation speech of an art exhibition, when the Sar Wars music started was very embarrassing, also because I could’nt find the phone in my bag.
My phone is an iPhone 7, I have had it since last year.
In this moment I’m not looking for a new model because two weeks ago I dropped my phone on the floor and I had to change the screen, now it works well, more or less.
I have got “Apertura” as my ringtone.
I use my phone to talk, send message, take photos and to set alarm clock to wake-up but also to remind me something that I have to do.
I use my phone also to be on social networks: I don’t like very much Facebook, but I like Instagram because I love taking photos and Instagram is a way to share post pictures and videos.
I usually don’t switch off my phone because on the iPhone the alarm clock doesn’t works if the phone is switched off, but before sleeping I’m turning my phone into airplane mode. I’ve never lost my phone, but it was stolen twice from my bag.
Maybe once or twice I send messages to the wrong person.
I don’t forget to turn my phone off because usually I put my phone on a silent mode.
Many thanks Carolina! I’ll look for corrections later.
Yours,
Michael (Editor)

-What make is your phone? How long have you had it?
I have an iPhone 4s. I have had it since October 2011.
-Would you like to get a new one? Why (not)?
I would like to change it with a new one because it doesn’t work very well anymore. Often I have to wait some minutes before it restarts to work.
-What ringtone do you have?
I chose a ringtone called “Apertura” that it is the default one and I change it rarely.
-What do you use your phone for (apart from talking)?
I use my phone for many things: usually for searching something on the internet, sending messages through WhatsApp or Telegram, reading some news, taking pictures or videos and often for going on social-networks.
-Where and when do you normally switch off your mobile?
I switch off my phone every night just before sleeping except when I sleep out or when my boyfriend leaves Rome, so that if anyone needs me, I’m reachable.
-Have you ever… lost your phone?
No, I didn’t. I’m a very careful person!
-Have you ever…sent a message to the wrong person?
Yes, of course. I think that these are things that happen to everyone but I don’t remember any particular episode now.
-Have you ever…forgot to turn your phone off (with embarrassing consequences)?
Yes, of course. At least once in my life it must have happened, probably in the classroom. A similar funny incident happened to me some time ago: I was at the cinema with my boyfriend. I felt very tired that evening, so I fell asleep after a while with the phone in my hand, which I hadn’t turned off but only put on silent mode. At a certain point my sister sent me an audio-message and while I was sleeping it started to play – I don’t know how – so suddenly I woke up. I tried to stop it quickly but I couldn’t stop it. Actually I was still sleeping. My boyfriend helped me but everybody was watching me in that cinema and I was very embarrassed.
I’ve an IPhone 6s pink that I’ ve bought an year ago. It’s a recent model of phone so it works better and I don’t think to buy a new one. I’ve a normal apple ring tone and I use my phone to take photos, send and check email, watch videos and send messages to my friends. I never switch off my phone but in my office I set it to silent mode. I’ve never lost my phone but often I send messages to the wrong person. I’m very distracted person. 🙂
Nice one! More soon,

Google Voice is a free internet telephone service that allows you to combine all your cellular services, and forward calls to several devices at a time. If you have a landline at home, as well as a business phone and your personal smartphone, rather than bouncing between three different numbers and devices, you can give out one simple Google Voice number and when someone calls, you’ll be notified at all three numbers. You can also use Google Voice on a computer to place and receive calls. But before you can use any of Google Voice’s features, you’ll need to have a Google account first. You’ll also need to have an existing U.S.-based mobile or landline phone number. For the user who simply has too many phones and numbers to manage, Google Voice is a great resource for merging multiple communication channels. It’s also good for regular travelers who are forced to bounce between carriers. If you find yourself changing phone numbers and paying a fortune for international calls, or for those users who are looking to record incoming calls for free, it’s also a great option. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting you started using Google Voice. How to set up Google Voice on a computer2. Sign into your Google account if you aren’t already. 3. Enter your area code or city in the Google Voice text box. 4. In the drop-down that appears, select a phone number. 5. You’ll then be prompted to verify your existing phone number. Click «Verify» on the page that loads. 6. Type in the number you want Google to forward your calls to. 7. Click «Send Code.» 8. Once you receive the code either via text or phone call, enter it into the box. 9. Click «Verify.» 10. To confirm that this is the number you want your calls forwarded to, click «Claim.» 10. It will prompt you to click «Finish» twice before you’re done. How to link more than one number to your Google Voice account on your computer1. While logged in, go to the Google Voice dashboard. 2. Click «New linked number» at the bottom of the dashboard menu. 3. Enter the number you wish to link and click «Send code.» 4. Finish verifying your new number the same way as your first. 5. To see all your linked numbers, return to Google Voice dashboard scroll to the bottom of the page. You can find all your linked numbers under the phone icon. How to set up Google Voice on a mobile device1. Download the Google Voice app on your iPhone or Android phone. 2. Once the app is open, select which Google account you’d like to attach a Voice number to and tap «Continue.» 3. On the next page, tap «Search» in the lower-right corner to select a Google Voice number. 4. Enter your zip code or city to load a list of regionally relevant numbers for you to choose from. 5. Tap the green «Select» button next to the number you want. 6. Google Voice will confirm the number you selected. Tap «Next» on the next two screens to begin the verification process. 7. Enter the phone number you want to connect to your Google Voice number. 8. On the next screen, enter the code texted to your phone before selecting «Verify.» 9. Tap «Claim» to confirm you want to link the Google Voice number to your phone before choosing «Finish.» How to use Google VoiceYou can treat Google Voice just like your normal Phone app, but with even more flexibility.
