A. People work together for a simple reason — it makes difficult jobs easier. If you had to move a heavy piece of furniture from one room to another, would you do it all by yourself or find someone to help you? As you would probably agree, with a friend you can get the job done more quickly, and neither of you will be as tired afterwards. For similar reasons, animals also use teamwork. In animal groups, each individual works to help the group as a whole.

B. Some species have developed intelligent ways of gathering food. Coastal bottlenose dolphins have developed a unique way of catching fish which requires extraordinary teamwork. The dolphins follow a school of fish until they are near a bank. Then, they swim towards the fish creating a wave which pushes the fish out of the water and onto the bank. The dolphins end up half out of the water lying on the bank where they eat the helpless fish. In order for this to work, each dolphin must rush towards the bank at exactly the same time, otherwise the wave won’t be strong enough. How they decide when to go and who gives the order is unknown, but a high level of communication definitely exists between them.

C. Animals can’t talk but some species have developed ways of of letting others know where food is. For example, if a bee finds nectar, it has two ways of informing its hive. It may create a trail with the scent of the nectar. When the other bees pick up the smell, they can follow it to the nectar. Or the bee may perform the ‘waggle dance’. The other bees understand what this dance means, and then they work as a team to collect the nectar.

D. Hunting can be difficult and even dangerous for one animal. It also takes a lot of energy to chase and kill prey, which is wasted if the prey escapes. Hunting in packs helps make predators more efficient. A pack of wolves, for example, can kill a large animal such as a deer or moose, while one wolf can only kill a small animal. Wolf packs, which consist of two to twenty wolves, may surprise their prey or pursue it for hours before attacking. If there are several animals, the pack will choose the weakest one because it will take less effort to catch. In the end, the wolves share the meat with each other.

E. As well as food, animals need somewhere to live. Some animals simply move into the best place they can find, but others build a home for themselves. A particularly intelligent builder is the beaver. Beavers live by rivers and streams and build dams to create pools of deep water which help keep their homes safe. The whole colony about five to six members, co-operates to create the dam with trees they’ve cut down using their long, sharp front teeth, then construct their home, which looks like a stick igloo, in side of the bank.

A. Education has the power to transform a person’s life. I am the living example of this. When I was on the streets, I thought I was not good at anything but I wrote a poem, and it got published. I went back to school to learn. I have learned the benefit of research and reading, of debate and listening. One day soon a group of fresh-faced college students will call me professor.

B. Language has the capacity to change the world and the way we live in it. People are often afraid to call things by their direct names, use taboos not to notice dangerous tendencies. Freedom begins with naming things. This has to happen in spite of political climates, careers being won or lost, and the fear of being criticized. After Helen Caldicott used the word ‘nuclear arms race’ an anti-nuclear movement appeared.

C. I never wanted to be a teacher. Yet years later, I find myself teaching high school English. I consider my job to be one of the most important aspects of my life, still I do not teach for the love of teaching. I am a teacher because I love to learn, and I have come to realize that the best way to learn is to teach.

D. One day my sister and I got one and the same homework. My sister finished the task in 2 minutes and went off to play. But I could not do it, so I went into my sister’s room and quickly copied her work. But there was one small problem: my father caught me. He didn’t punish me, but explained that cheating makes people feel helpless. And then I was left feeling guilty for cheating.

E. Lifelong learning does not mean spending all my time reading. It is equally important to get the habit of asking such questions as ‘what don’t I know about this topic, or subject?’, ‘what can I learn from this moment or person?’, and ‘what more do I need to learn?’ regardless of where I am, who I am talking to, or what I am doing.

F. Math has always been something that I am good at. Mathematics attracts me because of its stability. It has logic; it is dependable and never changes. There might be some additions to the area of mathematics, but once mathematics is created, it is set in stone. We would not be able to check emails or play videogames without the computer solving complex algorithms.

G. When my high school English teacher asked us to read Shakespeare, I thought it was boring and too difficult. I agonized over the syntax — I had never read anything like this. But now I am a Shakespeare professor, arid enjoy teaching Hamlet every semester. Each time I re-read the play, I find and learn something new for myself.

Digital Transformation: History, Present, and Future Trends

The world is changing faster than ever. The Internet of Things (IoT), mobility, cloud, big data, augmented reality, blockchain, and social media are driving companies to the next level of digital customer engagement and IT-enabled business processes, products, and services. In virtually every industry, digital technologies are bringing about unprecedented transformation and changing our work and lives in ways we have never anticipated.

A Short History of Digital Transformation

Digital transformation is an actively discussed topic these days, but this was also true in the late 1990s and again in the mid-2000s. We started to computerize processes almost 30 years ago, and we have already implemented digital activities in our organizations.

First, digital channels, or websites, connected companies and their customers. After that, digital processes emerged to support customer interactions. As companies’ digital ambitions quickly grew, they soon needed dedicated digital teams to manage new social and mobile channels. This enabled organizations to leverage digital data on their own activities and interactions. Connected to customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders, companies realized that they operated in digital networks.

To make better use of the vast amounts of information, companies started to connect all processes and devices into networks. Seeing potential in connectivity, organizations focused on digital platforms connecting all system players rather than the traditional method of doing business through intermediaries. Companies began to experiment with new digital ways of doing business, trying to leverage data more effectively, create greater agility, and retain talent.

Riding the Digital Transformation Wave

Practically all digital transformation initiatives of today are being built on so-called 3rd Platform technologies and solutions, including mobile, cloud, big data/analytics, and social technologies. Innovation Accelerators—IoT, robotics, 3D printing, next-generation security, and others—depend on the 3rd Platform and expand its capabilities. In the rapidly scaling digital marketplace, they have become the key growth drivers for many companies.

Digital technology is integrated into every aspect of today’s companies, and those businesses that fail to set an efficient digital strategy and maximize the impact of digitalization risk being left behind. The Russell Reynolds Associates survey shows that media, telecom, and consumer financial services were the most disrupted sectors in 2015, with retail and technology close behind.

Digital technologies transform industries in completely new ways, offering fundamental improvements in personalization, efficiency, and safety. However, we have only started exploring the digital opportunities, and this digital transformation has only just begun. In the near future, digital innovations and initiatives will take us into new transformation phases, bringing exciting changes to our lives and reshaping the global economy.

What the Future Holds for Digital Transformation

Gartner also believes that digital transformation will continue to fuel our future. By 2021, Gartner expects, the physical, financial, and healthcare worlds will become so digitalized that 20% of all activities we do will involve at least one of the top-seven digital giants. Mobile apps and payments, smart agents, and digital ecosystems will make the digital giants part of our everyday lives.

According to Forrester and its 2017 digital business predictions, transformation budgets will increase enormously next year. Digital transformation will tip from experiences to operations, and many firms will invest billions in operational excellence. Digital businesses will finally build holistic customer experiences, breaking down the gaps between web, mobile app, and offline engagement.

Clearly, all of the digital transformation predictions have one thing in common: change. Digitalization is creating more opportunities than ever before, but at the same time, it requires a new mindset and readiness to embrace change. Both companies and individuals need to accept the new reality of constant change to find a place in the developing digital world.

Task 1

You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

Greening’s frog is mostly found in forests in Brazil. It was first described in 1896. It’s unusual because the frog lives in tree holes. The small dark green animal has a massive flat head. The bones of the head have the form of a helmet covered with spines. To hide in their homes, Greening’s frogs close the entrance to their holes with the helmet. This trick protects the frog from big animals and prevents it from losing much water. It is not easy to pull the frog from its hole. When attacked, the spines on the head become poisonous. Eating Greening’s frog is like eating a poisonous cactus. The frog’s poison is dangerous to humans too.
