I’m going to give a talk about pets.

It’s true that nowadays a lot of people keep pets. I think that a pet can be a good friend especially for elder people who live alone. They have somebody to care about and don’t feel lonely. Also many parents buy pets for their children to teach them how to be responsible.

I’m sure that cats and dogs are the most popular pets in big cities. It’s easier to buy food for them than for exotic pets like snakes, for example. And in my opinion it’s even better to have a cat in the city as you don’t need to take it for a walk.

Of course, having a pet is a big responsibility. If you have one you can’t go away for a weekend as you have somebody to look after it at home. You can’t think only about yourself, you have to think about your pet too.

My attitude to keeping pets is strongly positive as I have got a cat myself. My cat is the prettiest and the cleverest animal in the world!

I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about pets.

It is all the same to me if people have exotic pets or regular ones, I think that having any kinds of creatures is cool, of course if you aren’t afraid of them. In Russia the most popular pets are dogs and cats like everywhere. Some people buy hamsters, rats, Guiney pigs, parrots or fish.

Today almost every family has a pet. Speaking about the reasons, I believe that most people keep animals because they make their lives happier. Also parents usually buy a pet for their children. It can help them become more responsible. In my opinion, cats, dogs and parrots are the most popular pets in big cities. They are widespread because all of them can easily live within the apartment. But it is important for all owners to keep in mind that having an animal is a big responsibility. Life of creatures depends on them. They should always remember to feed, walk with a pet. And if necessary to play with it. In conclusion, I think that pets make our lives happier. But it also is a big responsibility to keep one. Owners should be very attentive to needs of their pets.

Hi, Ben. Thanks for your long and interesting letter. It was pleasure for me to hear you after not hearing you for ages. Sorry that I did not write earlier but I was very busy.
I think that people do not want to have pets because the afraid of responsibility on them. You have to feed your pet, comb his hair and other. No, I do not like snakes or spider. They are very horrible for me. I prefer cats or dogs which are the best friends for me. There are a lot of popular pets in my country such as dogs, cats, turtles and otheres, too.
This is everything what I wanted to say about.

Imagine that you are doing a project on what pets are popular in Zetland. You have found some data on the subject – the results of the opinion polls (see the table below).

Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Write 200-250 words.

Use the following plan:

– make an opening statement on the subject of the project;

– select and report 2–3 facts;

– make 1–2 comparisons where relevant;

– outline a problem that can arise with keeping a pet and suggest a way of solving it;

What to do with pets while on holiday (when you want to travel)?

Ask a friend (family member/ neighbour) to look after your pet or think about getting a pet sitter.

One standard option is placing pets in pet hotels (boarding kennels/ catteries) while you’re away.

Have your pet go to someone else’s place.

Make a vet appointment to seek medical care and treatment in response to symptoms.

Find a clinical animal behaviourist to help you deal with the problem(s).

The best strategy is to avoid or reduce exposure to the animal(s) as much as possible.

Keep pets outdoors.

Medications or other treatments may be necessary to relieve allergy symptoms.

Groom pets regularly with a fine toothed pet comb.

Sweep and vacuum daily.

Cover furniture with easy-wash slip-covers.

Provide your puppy with teething toys to chew.
