What time is it in Russia, what’s the time difference and how many hours ahead is it? World time zone map explained
With all major cities around the world in different zones, it can be difficult to work out the exact time there
WITH countries around the globe all in different time zones, it can be difficult to know what time it is on the other side of the world.
Here’s how you can tell the time in different countries.
What time zone is the UK in?
The UK is covered by one standard time zone and uses either Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) OR British Summer Time (BST).
Between October and March, the UK observes Greenwich Mean Time, which is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.
From March to October, the UK is in British Summer Time, which starts when the clocks go forward.
GMT was formerly used as the international civil time, and was set up to be used by mariners and sailors.
Now it is used as the centre point from which other time zones are calculated.
What time is it in Russia?
Moscow in Russia is just two hours ahead of the United Kingdom.
This means that when it is noon in London, the time in Moscow is 2pm.
But it depends where you are on the vast continent.
How are the different time zones worked out?
The times zones around the world are worked out using longitude starting from GMT.
Every 15 longitudinal degrees indicates a new time zone and time is changed by an hour.
The international date line passes through the mid Pacific and is half way around the world from GMT.
When the international date line reaches midnight, it indicates the start of a new day.

How can you work out the time in different countries compared to the UK?
As the UK is on GMT it is classed as the centre of all of the time zones.
To work out the time in another country, you should determine whether you are travelling east or west.
If travelling east towards continental Europe, the Middle East and Asia, it is likely you will have to add hours to work out the time there.
If travelling west across the Atlantic to the US or Caribbean, you will have to take away hours.
