The Flatmates

Aged 379, Viago fancies himself a dandy and a gentleman. He is also more than a little uptight.

Aged 862, he was once an infamous tyrant known as «Vlad the Poker».

At age 183, he is the «young rebel» of the group who is fond of knitting, erotic dancing, and «being cool».

A 8,000-year-old vampire who lives in the basement of the house and generally keeps to himself.

Other Characters

An intended victim who is turned into a vampire when he is attacked by Petyr. He has turned into something of a occasionally recurring character on the spin-off series Wellington Paranormal.

Nick’s best friend, and a mortal.

Deacon’s beleaguered familiar, who is mainly tasked with finding potential victims for the vampires to feed on, and then cleaning up after them.

A mysterious figure from Vladislav’s past.

Early life [ ]

As a human, Deacon worked as a merchant. While passing a scary-looking castle during this era, Deacon was ambushed by a winged Petyr, who dragged him into a dungeon, bit his neck, and forced him to drink his blood, thus turning him into a vampire. Despite this traumatic event, the two immediately became “friends”.

During World War II, Deacon joined Hitler’s secret “Nazi vampire army”. After Germany’s defeat, Deacon fled from Europe and migrated to New Zealand.

What We Do in the Shadows (film) [ ]

At some point after World War II, Deacon moved into a flat in Te Aro, Wellington, with fellow vampires Vladislav, Viago and Petyr. As the youngest vampire of the group, he was seen as the rebel. He took on a familiar named Jackie and overworked her, making her maintain the flat while putting off turning her into a vampire for over four and a half years. One night in 2013, he requested that she bring some humans to the flat for him to eat, she brought her ex-boyfriend Nick. After being pursued by Deacon, Viago and Vladislav, Nick escaped from the flat, only for Petyr to ambush him and turn him into a vampire.

Nick was welcomed into the vampire group, where Deacon soon grew jealous of Nick’s new reputation as the youngest and trendiest of the group, causing the two to fight. Deacon, despite his arrogant nature, grew particularly fond of Nick’s human friend Stu as he introduced the vampires to new technology.

Shortly afterwards, Nick inadvertently led a vampire hunter into the flat, causing Petyr’s death. When Nick realised the hunter was a man he had recently met on a night out, Deacon became angry and fought him. Police officers O’Leary and Minogue arrived to investigate the noise, but under Viago’s hypnotism they didn’t notice Nick and Deacon hovering in the air mid-fight.

The vampires put Nick on trial for not only getting Petyr killed, but for copying Deacon’s style. Nick received the Procession of Shame and was banished from the flat.

Sometime later the vampires attended the Unholy Masquerade. There, they bumped into Jackie, who had been turned into a vampire by Nick, much to Deacon’s annoyance. When Pauline, the guest of honour, realised Stu was there, she attempted to attack him and the camera crew. Stu killed Pauline’s boyfriend, Julian, with a wooden stake. The vampires and camera crew escaped the ball, only to agitate a group of werewolves into attacking them as the full moon emerged. Stu was seemingly killed by the werewolves, leaving the vampires devastated.

A while later, Stu reappeared, having been turned into a werewolf, and helped reconcile the flatmates with Nick and the werewolves.

Possibly the last piece of footage the documentary crew filmed was of Deacon trying to hypnotise the viewers into forgetting everything they just saw. [1]

What We Do in the Shadows (TV series) [ ]

After the death of Baron Afanas, the vampires Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja were summoned to the Vampiric Council, of which Deacon and his flatmates were members. He and the other council members heard evidence from the Baron’s familiar and Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar. Guillermo confessed to the murder, which none of the vampires believed, and they plotted to eat him until Nandor confessed instead. Although Deacon and all the council members agreed that they didn’t like the Baron, the council sentenced the three vampires to death by exposure to sunlight in a well. The three however escaped with the help of Guillermo and their roommate, Colin. [2]

What We Do in the Shadows: Interviews with Some Vampires [ ]

An early version of Deacon’s character prominently appears in the 2005 short film What We Do in the Shadows: Interviews with Some Vampires, credited as Deacon Brugh. This version bears some similiarities to his film counterpart, most notibly his dress sense, shapeshifting abilities and background as a member of the Nazi party, but he is overall more bored with life as a vampire and is only 107 years old. [3]

Jenna was a college student attending the Staten Island Community College. She was a keen LARPer and roleplayed as an elf character named «Jenelf». She shared a dorm room with Shanice, a fellow LARPer, and had a long-distance boyfriend (whom she communicated with via webcam) though they never met in person. [1]

Because of her interest in LARPing, Guillermo believed that Jenna and her fellow LARPers were virgins (an assumption which turned out to be correct). He lured Jenna and her friend Jonathan to the house of his master, Nandor, so that they could be used as food to celebrate a visit from Baron Afanas. However, before they could be eaten they were found by Colin Robinson, who drained both of them of their energy and left their blood unsuitable for feeding. As the Baron had gone back into a slumber, they were allowed to leave alive. [2]

Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja later eavesdrop on a LARPers meeting, with the intention of feeding on some of the attendees, however they are so depressed by the sights that they see that they elect simply to leave. However, Nadja took pity on Jenna after seeing her being bullied and mistreated by the other LARPers. She followed Jenna and talked with her on her walk home and discussed transforming her into a vampire, which Jenna misinterpreted as flirting due to Nadja’s sexual language. Nadja then bit Jenna’s neck and shared a flask of her blood with her, beginning her transformation into a vampire. [1]

Jenna began experiencing the heavy illness which accompanies the transformation, becoming pale and projectile vomiting. At one point she appeared physically dead, leading to Shanice calling an ambulance, though when paramedics tried to transport her apparent corpse off-campus, she woke up and rushed back indoors. [3] She attempted to sate her growing hunger for blood by killing and eating animals, but to no avail.

Nadja, who had been watching Jenna’s struggle from afar, then reappeared to Jenna and committed to teaching her how to live as a vampire and to complete her transition by killing a human and drinking their blood. They attended a frat party on her community college campus, where Jenna, frustrated at being ignored by the party-goers, first displayed her unique power of turning invisibile. She immediately put her newfound powers to use by dragging the singer of the attending ska band out of the house and drinking his blood in the bushes outside. [4]

Her first night as a true vampire complete, Jenna admitted to Nadja that it had been the best night of her life. She suggested that they watch the sunrise together to celebrate, with the two wearing motorcycle helmets to avoid being burned by the sunlight. However, this plan failed and the two were forced to retreat indoors after they started burning. [4]

Jenna never returned to college and Shanice realized what had happened to her. As Shanice considered Jenna to be her first real friend, Shanice was so devastated that she joined a vampire hunting group, the The Mosquito Collectors of the Tri-State Area. [5] She encouraged the group to infiltrate the house that Jenna received her vampire training in, but this led to disaster as Shanice got the house mixed up with that of another vampire household. [6]

Biography [ ]

When Stu was a human, he worked as a systems analyst and became a friend of fellow human Nick after dating his sister. Nick was transformed into a vampire by Petyr and welcomed into his flat alongside Viago, Vladislav and Deacon. Nick introduced the vampires to Stu and initially used hypnosis on him to ensure that he didn’t realise they were vampires. Nick also protected Stu by asking the flatmates not to eat him, or turn him into a vampire as Stu is vegetarian. Nick eventually decided to tell Stu that he and the flatmates were vampires, which Stu took surprisingly well.

Stu helped introduce the vampires to modern technology. He taught them how to use computers to make online calls, watch videos of the sunrise, “poke” people, buy furniture and look at pictures of virgins, and use phones to take selfies and send text messages. The vampires grew very fond of Stu but became agitated by Nick, who put the group at risk by constantly revealing his vampire status to members of the public.

When Nick accidentally caused a vampire hunter to break into the flat and kill Petyr, the remaining flatmates carried out the Procession of Shame on Nick and banished him. However, they allowed Stu to visit whenever he wanted.

Shortly afterwards, Nick brought Stu to the Unholy Masquerade. Upon realising that he was the only human guest among vampires, witches and zombies, Viago and Deacon became concerned for Stu’s safety. They tried to lead him out, only for him to be confronted by the guest of honour, Pauline, who was also Vladislav’s ex-girlfriend. Vladislav arrived to defend Stu, but Stu fought back by impaling Pauline’s new boyfriend, Julian, with a wooden stake.

Viago, Vladislav, Deacon and Nick left the ball hailing Stu as a hero, but became distracted by a pack of werewolves, led by Anton, in human form. The vampires mocked them, only for the werewolves to transform as the full moon emerged and attack the group. Stu was disembowelled by the pack, leaving Nick and the other vampires devastated. Police officers O’Leary and Minogue assumed a dog caused his injuries and an ambulance was called. However as Stu was being carried in, he sprang back to life and fled the scene. He blacked out and was offered new clothes from the werewolves, back in human form, and realised he had now become a werewolf and was accepted into the pack.

Shortly afterwards, Nick brought Stu back to the flat, causing the vampires to befriend the werewolf pack and reconcile with Nick. [1]

Stu briefly appears in the short film as a human. Although the other characters are very different from their film counterparts, Stu’s appearance and personality is unchanged and he is still a good friend of Nick.
