‘Haven’t you got any homework, Jack?’ his mother always asked him as she began to make the tea.

‘Eh? Oh, yes, I’ve got a little,’ he used to answer. ‘I’ll do it later when there is nothing interesting on TV.’

At first Sarah allowed Jack to watch TV instead of doing his homework first, but she soon discovered that he never had a little homework — it was always a great deal — and that there was never a time when there was nothing interesting on TV, so after putting off doing his homework for a couple of hours, Jack was too tired to do his homework properly, if at all.

Sarah then decided to make him do homework first. This was always a battle, and often when Jack obeyed his mother, he did the work quickly and carelessly in order to finish it and get back to his beloved TV.

The result was the same — bad work, for which he usually got low marks the next day at school, either because his homework was full of mistakes, or because he did not know the work he was supposed to have prepared the night before.

One evening Jack’s science homework was about famous scientists like Thomas Edison, who made important discoveries and inventions in the field of electricity. When he had homework that consisted of learning facts, his mother usually tested him when he finished, to make sure that he had really done the work properly and not left anything out, and this is what she did this time. She didn’t let him stop until she was sure that he knew what was in his book.

But this time it was less of a fight than usual to make Jack sit down and do his homework carefully, because it had a strong connection with television.

In class the next day, the teacher asked Jack, ‘What are some of the things that Thomas Edison did for science?’

‘Well,’ Jack answered happily, ‘first of all, if it weren’t for Edison, we’d all be watching TV by candlelight!’

Past perfect continuous (I had been doing)

Yesterday morning I got up and looked out of the window. The sun was shining, but the ground was very wet.

Тренируемся переводить предложения или небольшие тексты, которые “насыщены” глагольными формами Past Perfect Continuous Tense. Немного усложняем задачу и теперь в предложениях, которые написаны в прошедшем времени в четырех “оттенках” надо определить прошедшее совершенное длительное время.

Переведите следующие предложения на английский язык, обращая особое внимание на употребление Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

1. Художник поставил картину на мольберт и смотрел на нее минуту или две, потом снял ее и поставил на ее место другую другую картину. Он показал мне около тридцати полотен. Это был результат шести лет, в течение которых он писал картины.

2. Она не сказала мне, что ее семья долго жила в этом городе.

Итак, переведите следующие предложения на английский язык, обращая внимания на употребление Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense or Pase Perfect Tense? Часть вторая.

Две глагольные формы Past Perfect Continuous Tense и Past Perfect Tense имеют один общий смысл: ОТНОСИТЕЛЬНОСТЬ, то есть, имеется определенный момент в прошлом, на который они “равняются”. Однако равняться на момент в прошлом можно по разному. Past Perfect Tense рассказывает, что действие благополучно завершилось, закончилось к определенному моменту. А Past Perfect Continuous Tense говорит о том действие длилось, продолжалось до определенного момента в прошлом и прекратилось, так сказать, остановилось непосредственно перед этим моментом или его “зацепило”. О завершенности в этом случае ни слова и не говорится. Вот этим они и отличаются друг от друга. В русском языке нам приходится ориентироваться по указателям времени или по маячкам, которые подсказывают нам какая глагольную форма уместна в том или ином случае. Напишу несколько случаев, которые вызывают затруднения даже у студентов с хорошим уровнем английского языка.

Если мы говорим о том, сколько раз происходит действие или событие до определенного момента в прошлом, то уместнее использовать Past Perfect Tense. В русском языке предложения с “частотой” звучат примерно так:

Сколько раз ты пытался поговорить с ним до того, как он уехал? = How many times had you tried to speak to him before he left?

Я несколько раз ему вчера позвонил прежде чем поехал к нему домой. = I had called him several times before I went to his place.

Я навещал его пару раз перед тем, как он уехал. = I had came to see him twice before he left.

Теперь сопоставим пары предложений и почувствуем разницу между ЧАСТОТОЙ и ДЛИТЕЛЬНОСТЬЮ.

Я долго разговаривал с ним перед тем, как он уехал. = I had been speaking to him for a long time when I managed to persuade him not to do it.

Я несколько раз говорил с ним перед тем, как он уехал. = I had spoken to him several times when I managed to persuade him not to do it.

Он три раза повторил правила прежде чем начать делать упражнение. = He had revised some grammar rules three times before he started doing the exercises.

Он повторял правила два часа перед тем как начать делать упражнения. = He had been revising some grammar ruled for two hours before he started doing the exercises.

Врач дважды осмотрел мальчика, а потом выписал рецепт. = The doctor had examined this boy twice before he made a prescription.

Врач долго осматривал мальчика, а потом выписал рецепт. = The doctor had been examining this boy for a long time before he made a prescription.

Он пробыл там два часа, когда она позвонила и сказала, что не придет. = He had been there for two hours when she called him up and said that shewouldn’t come.

Этот дом принадлежал моему дяде двадцать лет, прежде чем он решил его продать. = This house had belonged to my uncle for twenty years before he decided to sell it.

Этот дом простоял здесь двадцать лет, прежде чем мой дядя решил его продать. = This house had been standing here for twenty years before my uncle decided to sell it.

Я долго не понимал это правило, пока учитель мне его не объяснил. = I hadn’t understood this rule for a long time until the teacher explained it to me.

Я повторял это правило до тех пор, пока его не понял. = I had been revising this rule for a long time until I understood it.

Упражнения среднего уровня предполагают. что учащийся разбирается в группах времен, то есть может различить их между собой. В следующих предложениях надо раскрыть скобки и поставить глаголы в нужном прошедшем времени: Past Indefinite Tense, Past Continuous Tense, Past Perfect Tense или от Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

1. A young man who (to stand) on the pavement (to come) forward.

2. My sister’s birthday (to be) the only thing everybody (to talk) at home for the last three weeks.

3. He (to leave) a message that he (to call).

В упражнениях среднего уровня надо уже думать грамматике, в данном случае, какое именно прошедшее время уместно употребить в том или ином случае. Но подсказок в предложении хватает, поэтому трудностей не предвидится. В следующих предложениях надо раскрыть скобки и поставить глаголы в Past Indefinite Tense или Past Perfect Continuous Tense. В конце упражнения и раскрою скобки и напишу предложения в нужном времени, чтобы вы могли себя проверить.
