CARD 9 You are going to give a talk about ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS.

· why people worry about environmental problems nowadays and why global warming is such a serious problem;

-the influence of global warming on wildlife;

— what the most serious environmental problem in the place where you live is;

— what young people can do to improve the ecological situation

When it comes to speaking about environmental problems, I’d like to point out that they are of vital importance as it’s impossible to survive without their solution. Now let’s consider why it is so.

To start with, people worry about environmental issues for several reasons. Firstly, it is difficult to breathe in big cities because of air pollution. Rivers, seas and oceans are polluted, too, as factories and plants pour waste into them. The 21st century faces one of the most urgent problems- the climate change. The Global warming leads to unpredictable extreme weather conditions including hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis. Ice is melting, sea levels are rising and low-lying areas are disappearing under the waves.

The Global warming also results in the extinction of animals and loss of biodiversity. For example, Arctic polar bears are in great danger. By 2100, summer ice may disappear in the Arctic, and polar bears won’t survive.

Speaking about Saint Petersburg, air pollution is the most urgent environmental problem there because of gas emission of heavy traffic. Besides, cars cause noise pollution. Last but not least, industrial waste from factories is highly toxic and can pollute the Neva River and the marine environment.

As for the third question, young people can do their part to save the environment reducing their carbon footprint, participating in cleaning up campaigns and planting young trees. Moreover, they can ride bicycles or use public transport to lessen gas emission. Besides, everyone can save water, gas, electricity at home

To sum up, I strongly believe that we should care about the future of our planet and solve ecological problems.

1. Let’s talk about environment. What are the most serious environmental problems today?

We live in the world where there are a lot of ecological problems. Nowadays the global situation in ecology is serious.

Our planet is in serious danger. One of the most important environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water. Industrial pollution has made many sources of water undrinkable. Rivers, lakes and even seas have become poisonous. Thousands of fish die every year as a result of the illegal dumping of waste in rivers by factories all over the world.

Acid rain can damage life in lakes and rivers and destroy forests. The greenhouse effect may also have disastrous consequences for our planet. The world’s temperature is going up and the climate is changing.

One of the most alarming environmental problems is depletion of the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from the dangerous ultraviolet rays of the sun.

In my opinion, the most urgent ecological problem today is the environmental safety of nuclear power stations. Nuclear pollution can’t be seen, but its effects can be terrible. We all know how tragic the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster are. Nuclear waste also endangers people’s lives. People all over the world protest against nuclear tests and nuclear weapons. If we do not take any action, the possibility of a global nuclear disaster is very real.

Of course, we can’t help mentioning such burning issues as destruction of tropical forests and wildlife, overpopulation, and shortage of natural resources: The list of serious ecological problems could be continued.

2. Do you agree that air pollution is a cause of people’s health problems? Why?

Air pollution is an important problem. In hundreds of cities and towns the concentration of harmful substances in the air is over ten times the admissible level. Every day a huge number of plants and factories emit lots of harmful substances into the atmosphere of big cities. The great increase in the use of motor cars has caused an increase in a new kind of air pollution. Pollution from factories and cars poison the air we breathe, and is the main reason for the greenhouse effect and acid rain.

3. Imagine you are interviewing an animal protection activist. What questions would you ask him/ her?

What can you do to protect the endangered animals?

In what way can volunteers participate in this activity?

How is your work donated?

4. Give a piece of advice on what people can do to protect the environment.

It is very important to keep the world healthy and strong. Every kid can do something to help nature. It is a wise rule – to keep the country tidy, to water flowers and trees, to keep dogs under control. Never break plants and baby trees. We must always put rubbish in a rubbish bin. We should remember the three Rs: reuse, reduce, and recycle. Today the environmental question is very actual. The water and air are polluted, the forests are cut down. We should help the Earth. We should keep the planet healthy. I also can do all my best to save the Earth. I can feed the birds, plant trees. I always put rubbish in a rubbish bin. I help my parents to water flowers and trees, plant in our garden.

I think there are a lot of ways we can help to save the Earth. One way is to remember the three R’s. I save the plastic bags we get at the grocery shop and reuse them. I save the plastic food containers. They make good water toys. Before I buy something, I ask myself the following question: “Can I recycle it? If I have to throw it away, will it damage the environment?” I’ve just joined the RSPB Young Ornithologist Club. I’ve even asked my mum to help me make a protecting area for birds and other wild animals. We have planted trees. We’ve also made a pond to help frogs. I want to be the kid who saves the Earth!

5. If you have a chance to start a campaign to help the environment, what will you campaign for?

There are a lot of environmental groups and international organizations, whose main goal is to strengthen cooperation among environmentalists from different countries. The most famous of them is Greenpeace, which combines the people’s efforts for peace with the huge and ever mounting movement for nature conservation. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the name of another international organization that appeared in 1961. It has created or given support to National Parks on five continents.

As for me, I will campaign for protecting rare animals against extinction.

Many wild animals and birds are disappearing from Earth. Modern life is bad for them. The air isn’t fresh. The water isn’t clean. They don’t often have good food to eat and space to live. You can find their names in the Red Book. People must take special care of them all. We must save wildlife.

Clean water and clean air are necessary for our health. If we want to survive we must solve those problems quickly.

In recent years the number of environmental problems has increased greatly. One of the most dangerous problems for our planet is global warming which means that most climates all over the world are changing and getting warmer. It happens because we burn too much petrol resources, such as oil and coal, and the Earth heats up. This process can cause melting of the polar ice and the sea level rising in the future. If the climate changes there will be floods, heavy storms or severe droughts in different areas of the world. Cutting down on exhaust fumes from vehicles could help solve this serious problem.

Our planet is overpopulated, that’s why we are using up our natural resources – they are not endless. So the scientists have started looking for some alternate forms of energy such as water, wind, sunlight and even tides. These resources are clean, natural and unlimited. I’m glad that modern automobile industries make hybrids which use electric or solar energy instead of petrol. It would definitely help protect our environment from pollution.

There are different kinds of environmental pollution: air pollution, water pollution, land pollution. Sadly, not all human beings realize or admit that we are the ones who cause these problems and we should be the first to stop them and protect our environment. Because of the industrial revolution the air is polluted with awful chemicals; seas and oceans are poisoned with oil spills. Many rare species of flora and fauna are threatened with extinction.

We should be proud to live on our wonderful planet and understand that the consequences of pollution might be terrible and affect us and our children later. We should start recycling things made of glass, paper, plastic and aluminum. We should stop smoking and plant as many trees as we can because they can give us more oxygen. We need to drive less and use public transport in order to reduce fuel burning. We are responsible for the situation.

В последние годы число проблем окружающей среды сильно возросло. Одной из самых опасных проблем для нашей планеты является глобальное потепление, которое означает изменение климата по всему миру и его потепление. Это происходит оттого, что мы сжигаем слишком много топливных ресурсов, таких как нефть и уголь, и Земля нагревается. Этот процесс может привести к таянию полярного льда и повышению уровня моря в будущем. Если изменится климат, произойдут наводнения, сильные штормы или жестокие засухи в разных частях света. Сокращение выхлопных газов транспортных средств могло бы способствовать разрешению этой серьезной проблемы.

Из-за промышленной революции воздух загрязнен ужасными химикатами; моря и океаны отравлены разливами нефти. Многие редкие виды флоры и фауны находятся под угрозой вымирания.

Нам нужно гордиться тем, что мы живем на нашей замечательной планете, и следует понимать, что последствия загрязнения могут быть страшными и воздействовать на нас и наших детей позже. Нам нужно перерабатывать изделия из стекла, бумаги, пластика и алюминия. Нужно бросать курить и сажать как можно больше деревьев для того, чтобы они вырабатывали для нас больше кислорода. Мы должны меньше водить машины и стараться пользоваться общественным транспортом, чтобы снизить количество сжигаемого топлива. Мы ответственны за ситуацию.
