Our time in Russia is coming to an end and last week we put on a party for our Russian family to thank them before we leave. — Наше время в России подходит к концу и на прошлой неделе мы устроили вечеринку для нашей русской семьи, чтобы поблагодарить их перед нашим отъездом.

We decorated the room with flags from Russia and the UK. We also had lots of other decorations like balloons and streamers. It was so much fun getting ready for the party. Everyone helped us to decorate and choose the music.

The party was lots of fun. We sang songs and played lots of games. We even taught our Russian friends some songs we sing in the UK. Did you know that Russian teenagers like the Beatles as much as we do?

We are eating some of the delicious food that we prepared. We went shopping at a local market and bought lots of tasty treats. Everyone’s favourite was the potato pirozhkis! We can’t wait to make these for our friends back home.

Our friends gave us some beautiful flowers and wonderful gifts to say goodbye. Our time in Russia has been so special. We will never forget how much fun we had and how lucky we were to make lots of new friends. We hope we will be able to come back again one day!

For an end of the year party, I think it would be fun to go to a water park. There would be plenty of activities for everyone and they also have music. They usually have a picnic area and we can take ready-made food or we can barbeque hot dogs while we are there. We could all bring some type of treat to share with each other. I would bring rice crispy squares. For people who don’t want to go in the pool, we could always play volleyball or hide-and-seek.

The end of the school year is a great occasion to celebrate. There are a lot of things we can do. We can have an Awards party, a ceremony that is all about fun! Use ideas from personalities, memorable moments. Theme parties are always a hit! Whether it’s an Under-the-Sea or Western party, students will love entering into another world for the day wearing fancy dresses. Or we can have a picnic in the park. There we can have song and dance competitions. We can bring in hot dogs and buns, chips, drinks, and cookies or each student may cook a special dish and we’ll have a competition of recipes. Organizing a friendly game of volleyball or football is also a great addition to this picnic party. Good luck!

Tatiana’s Day

Every year on 25th January, students, teachers and professors celebrate Tatiana’s Day. This holiday celebrates Saint Tatiana, the patron saint of students. Universities all over Russia celebrate it with various events. In many schools, former students come to talk to the school children about their university studies. The best students receive awards and in some cities, such as Nizhniy Novgorod, citizens choose the best Tatiana from all the students of the city. Some communities have begun using the day to put on plays and performances for families and neighbours in their area. In the evening, people dance in the street or let off fireworks.

Russians believe the patron saint was named after Count Ivan Shuvalov’s mother, Tatiana. On 25th January 1755, Count Ivan and Empress Elizabeth agreed to build the first Russian university in Moscow. Tatiana’s name day also happened to be 25th January, so because of this, the tradition began. For over 250 years this celebration has taken place around Russia.

I like New Year’s Eve, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year. Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.

The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don’t go to school and my parents don’t go to work. We usually have got a very interesting New Year’s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December. Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top. My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday dinner. All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us tries to dress well.

New Year’s Eve is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. It is a pleasant moment to get presents. I usually get many nice useful things from my parents, relatives and friends. My parents put their presents under the New Year’s tree.

We like to see in the New Year at home with our relatives and friends. They come to us at 10 p.m. We go out to the street to watch firework display and to wish our neighbours «Happy New Year!». Then we sit at the table and cheerily see in New Year. We say, «Best wishes for the New Year!» We don’t go to bed till morning, we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes. I enjoy this holiday very much. And every time I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

There are many holidays in our country. But the most favourite holiday for Russian people is New Year’s Day. The 1st of January was a winter holiday and now it is also the first day of the New Year. Many schools and other organisations all over the Russia take a very interesting New Year’s parties at the end of December.

Russian people prepare for this holiday beforehand. There is a tradition to buy and to bring home a beautiful New Year’s trees at the end of December. People usually decorate the New Year’s trees with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top. This is an important New Year preparation activity for all members of family. The other tradition is to clean the house or flat, to decorate it, to prepare a holiday dinner and to get dressed up.

A. Splatfest

If you’re in the tiny Spanish town of Buñol in Valencia, Spain during the last week of August, make sure you take a spare change of clothes because things get very, very messy! ‘La Tomatina’ is a huge food fight that has been a strong tradition in Buñol since around 1945. No one really knows how it began, but everybody knows how it ends! The week of the fight includes a firework party, music, dancing, colourful street parades and even a huge paella cooking contest. Then, about 30,000 people throw around 100,000 kg of tomatoes at each other for one hour.

There are also street parties, treasure hunts and a huge firework display.

All you need are some old clothes and a bright idea!

D. Maslenitsa – Farewell to Winter

If you want to watch parades, see fireworks and open-air theatre performances and eat until you burst, then the Maslenitsa carnival (or ‘Blini Week’) in the heart of Moscow is the festival for you! This fun festival takes place around the end of February and celebrates the end of winter and the beginning of spring. For this reason, all the festival goers eat blini (pancakes), which symbolise the sun (round, golden and warm). At the end of the carnival week, there is a big bonfire to say a final goodbye to winter!
