The problem of cheating in exams is not a new problem. This problem may origin from the students’ ability to cheat during exams. There are many reasons for cheating. I am going to discuss three main reasons for cheating. First of all, the main reason which leads students to cheat on the tests is that they want to get good grades. Most of students are under pressure from their family, their friends and their teachers. They are afraid that, if they get bad marks, their parents will ground them; their friends will laugh at them.
They imagine a dark future, with no good jobs, no good life. On the other hand, if they see their classmates get high mark, and they want that fame, too. So they do cheating as well. As a result they can get good marks but they cannot achieve a proper knowledge. Having no ability for doing the exams is the second reasons that cause some students do cheating. From one side, students don’t have their own self-confidences, some cannot do the exams because they are too difficult for them, and some students believe that they are not well enough to pass the exams.
Instead of studying hard, paying attention to classes, reviewing lessons, and doing exercises, they try to cheat in exams. On the other side, many students don’t have enough time for reviewing, perhaps they get ill, and they have several different reasons. The final reasons why some students cheat on their exams is because they get lack of self- respect. Students with high self-respect will never cheat. They feel really embarrassed by cheating. Instead of this, they try to review the lessons as best as they can. So they get high grades. In contrast, students with low self-respect don’t feel ashamed of cheating on the tests.

To get good marks, they cheat as much as possible they can. They do not feel anything wrong, and only think about the result that they can get if the teacher find out his cheating. In conclusion, being under pressure for expressive scores, having no ability for doing exams and the lack of self-respect are the contributing factors to cheating in exams. In the future, I hope the awareness of students about no cheating during the test will be raised, our society which is based on workers, who are educated and having their own knowledge would develop fully.

There are many reasons to cheating. First of all, the main reason is caused by lazy students who still want to get high scores. furthermore, most of the students are under pressure from their family, friends and teachers. They are afraid that if the score is low, they will be complained and laughed. Last but not least, students are unable to do the exams because it was too difficult for them. There are several solutions to solve the problem. First, people need to avoid putting too much pressure on students. They should not spend time watching TV, surfing the web and much more on test days. Besides, they need to be educated that cheating is wrong so they shouldn’t cheat.
In my opinion, cheating is an important problem that need to be dealt. In the future, I hope students will not cheat in exams.

Introduction
The ability of a nation to compete effectively on the international front hinges on the quality of its education. With this in mind, it is okay to conclude that cheating in exams undermines the standard of education in a country and consequently hinders its ability to compete at the world stage. Indeed, students who cheat in exams become poor decision makers in their careers. Their productivity and level of integrity is adversely dented by their belief of having everything the easy way. Academic dishonesty is not new but with the increase in competition for jobs, most students have resorted to cheating in order to qualify for these jobs (Anderman and Johnston 75). The purpose of this paper is to research in detail the causes and effects of cheating in exams.
Definition of Cheating
In the education fraternity, cheating entails: copying from someone, Plagiarizing of academic work and paying someone to do your homework. There are numerous reasons why students cheat in exams however; this action elicits harsh repercussions if one is caught. This may include: suspension, dismissal and/or cancellation of marks (Davis, Grover, Becker and McGregor 16).
Causes
One of the major reasons that make students cheat in exams is the over-emphasis that has been placed on passing exams. Apparently, more effort has been directed towards passing of exams than learning due to the high competition in the job market. Similarly, most interviewers focus more on certificates rather than the knowledge of the candidate. It is no wonder most learning institutions these days focus on teaching how to pass an exam and completely disregard impacting knowledge to students.
In some cases, students cheat because they are not confident of their ability or skills in academics. Whenever this feeling is present, students resort to cheating as a way of avoiding ridicule in case of failure. In essence, some of these students are very bright but the fear of failure and the lack of adequate preparations compel them to cheat. The paradox is that when cheating, most students swear that they will never do it again but this only serves as the beginning of a vicious cycle of cheating (Anderman and Johnston 76).
Societal pressure is another major cause for cheating in schools. Parents, teachers and relatives always, with good intentions, mount too much pressure on students to get good grades in order to join good schools and eventually get high paying jobs. All this pressure creates innate feelings that it is okay to cheat in exams if only to satisfy their parents and teachers egos.
There are times when students justify cheating because others do it. In most cases, if the head of the class is cheating then most of the other students will feel they have enough reason to also cheat. The system of education is such that it does not sufficiently reprimand those who cheat and tends to hail those who pass exams regardless of how they have done—the end justifies the means.
With the advent of the internet, it has become very easy to access information from a website using a phone or a computer. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo have made it very easy for students to buy custom-made papers for their class work. It is very easy for students from all over the world to have the same answer for an assignment as they all use a similar website. Indeed, plagiarism is the order of the day, all on has to do is to have the knowledge to search for the different reports and essays on the net (Davis, Grover, Becker and McGregor 18).
Nowadays, most tutors spend most of their class time giving lectures. In fact, it is considered old fashioned to give assignments during class time. Consequently, these assignments are piled up and given during certain durations of the semester. This poses a big challenge to students who have to strike a balance between attending to their homework and having fun. As a result, the workload becomes too much such that it is easier to pay for it to be done than actually do it—homework then becomes as demanding as a full-time job (Jordan 234).
Effects
From a tender age, children are taught that cheating is wrong; yet most of them divert from this course as they grow up. In fact, most of them become so addicted to the habit that they feel the need to perfect it. Most often, if a student cheats and never gets caught, he is likely to cheat all his life. Research has shown that students who cheat in high school are twice likely to cheat in college. The bigger problem is that this character is likely to affect one’s career in future consequently tarnishing his/her image.
Cheating in exams poses a great problem in one’s career. To get a good grade as a result of cheating is a misrepresentation of facts. Furthermore, it is difficult for a tutor to isolate students who genuinely need specialized coaching. It becomes a huge embarrassment when a cheating student is expected to give a perfect presentation and fails to demonstrate his ability as indicated by his/her grades. In addition, students who cheat in examination do not get a chance to grasp important concepts in class and are likely to face difficulties in the future when the same principles are applied in higher levels of learning.
The worst-case scenario in cheating in an exam is being caught. Once a student is caught, his reputation is dealt a huge blow. It is likely that such a student will be dismissed or suspended from school. This hinders his/her ability to land a good job or join graduate school. It can also lead to a complete damage of one’s reputation making it hard for others to trust you including those who cheat (Jordan 235).
Conclusion
Cheating in exams and assignments can be attributed to many reasons. To begin with, teaching today concentrates so much on the exams and passing rather than impacting knowledge. Lack of confidence in one’s ability and societal pressure is another reason why cheating is so wide spread. Cheating cannot solely be blamed on the students; lecturers have also played their part in this. Apparently, most lectures concentrate on teaching than giving assignments during class time. This leaves the students with loads of work to cover during their free time.
Technology has also played its part in cheating—many students turn to the internet in a bid to complete their assignments. On the other hand, it is important to note than choices have consequences and the repercussions of cheating in an exams are dire. First, it completely ruins one’s reputation thereby hindering chances of joining college or getting a good job. It also leads to suspensions and/or expulsion from school. Furthermore, the habit is so addictive that it is likely to replicate in all aspects of life—be it relationships, work, business deals etc. It is important to shun this habit as nothing good can come out of it.

Cheating comes in many variations. Just because you are not leaning over and peaking at somebody else’s exam does not mean that you are not cheating. Cheating includes any dishonest action used by a student to complete an assignment without actually having to complete it themselves. Some of the most common forms of cheating are looking at someone else’s exam, using materials without permission, collaborating with other students without permission, and not reporting another student if you see that he or she is cheating. Students cheat for all types of reasons: pressure to succeed, no time to study, peer pressure, laziness, and the list goes on. While schools claim that a student can be expelled for cheating, many cheating students escape the consequences. I do not think that it’s possible to set consequences based on the reason why a person cheated because the severity of a reason can be relative, but it’s more logical to base consequences on the method in which the cheating was done.
Perhaps the most classic form of cheating on an exam is taking a quick peek at the exam of the person sitting next to you or in front of you. Oftentimes it’s easy to see answers in the corner of your eye and the teacher seldom notices. I believe that this type of cheating should result in automatic failure of the exam, no questions asked. Likewise, if the student tries to cheat again then he or she should fail the whole course. Looking at someone else’s exam is extremely unfair because you’re putting forth no effort to complete the work, and you’re benefitting from someone else’s hard work. Students generally do this when they’re not confident in their own answers and they want confirmation of the correct answer, but that doesn’t make it acceptable. Not enforcing consequences for this type of cheating will result in the student feeling as if he or she never has to study or do work, because there will always be someone to copy off of. One possible way to solve this problem is to have the exam questions in different orders so that a student would have to really try in order to steal someone’s answers, and it would make it more noticeable for the teacher.
Using restricted material is another common form of cheating. Students find ways to sneak in note-cards, write answers on their hands, peek at a textbook, or store information in electronic devices. Students usually do this to ensure that they don’t forget any information while taking the test. The best way to prevent any of these actions from happening is for the teacher to walk around the room and make sure that there is no material present. Unfortunately, technology makes this difficult. If a student is taking a math test then oftentimes a graphing calculator is needed, but these calculators have the capabilities to store material. I feel that if a student tries to cheat in this manner then the consequences should be that they are no longer able to use a calculator in future exams and they will fail the current test. Not allowing calculators during future exams would be a drastic consequence because many algebra and geometry tests require calculators. Obviously, if this type of cheating occurred again then the student should fail the course. If this type of cheating is not stopped then students will see no need to study or read their textbooks because they can just record the information.
Although many students do not realize that unapproved collaboration is a form of cheating, it actually is. Sometimes the teacher will walk out of the room or the classroom is so big that it’s impossible to hear whispering. Collaborating with classmates during an exam that is supposed to be done by each individual is dishonest. The consequence for this type of cheating should be failing the test, being separated from the class for future tests, and failing the class if it happens again. Collaborating with classmates gives some students an advantage over the ones that are not doing so, and it fails to reflect the skills of each individual. Obviously cheating in this way is a huge disadvantage to the student because they are not always going to have someone there to help.
Lastly, failing to report someone else’s cheating or allowing someone to cheat off of you is a form of cheating. Most students are not willing to report a cheater because they are concerned about the reactions they will get from their classmates. There are ways to anonymously report a cheater. While you may feel like you are throwing someone under the bus, you will actually be harming a lot more people if you don’t tell. If someone in the class gets a perfect score because they cheated then the curve of the test might be higher, and the expectations for high scores will also be higher. People that are not cheating do not have the same advantage as the ones that are, they did the hard work, and they are going to be the ones that get the short end of the stick. The consequences for not reporting a cheater should not be as severe as the ones for cheating. In fact, the consequences are mostly personal because it’s nearly impossible to tell if someone knows someone else cheated. The consequences are that you put in a lot of time and effort to study and you have less of a chance of getting a good grade.
No matter what reason a person has for cheating, it is never acceptable. If students do their work, study, budget their time, and pay attention then there should be no reason to cheat. Whether it’s peeking at someone else’s exam, storing answers in a calculator, collaborating with others, or not reporting another student cheating, the damage that it does to one’s integrity remains the same.
